Generative AI is Coming to the Emergency Room. Stethoscopes, thermometers, and cardiac monitoring machines are go-to technologies in hospital emergency departments—and now you can add generative AI to the list. Augmedix, a San Francisco-based company that provides AI-powered medical documentation tools, today announced a partnership with Emergency Services Inc. that will bring a version of the company’s technology created specifically for the chaos of the emergency room environment to seven Ohio facilities and over 50 doctors. Using proprietary LLMs as well as Google Cloud’s MedLM’s suite of medically tuned models, Augmedix Go ED is designed to capture conversations between physicians and ER patients via Bluetooth and draft medical notes almost instantaneously. The technology will take over a task previously performed by emergency room doctors as they rushed between patients and, hopefully, curb the administrative overload that’s causing them to quit.

Meta Drops AI Bombshell: Multi-token Prediction Models Now Open for Research. Meta has thrown down the gauntlet in the race for more efficient artificial intelligence. The tech giant released pre-trained models on Wednesday that leverage a novel multi-token prediction approach, potentially changing how large language models (LLMs) are developed and deployed.

Figma Pauses its New AI Feature after Apple Controversy. This week, Figma CEO Dylan Field said the company will temporarily disable its “Make Design” AI feature after it was accused of “heavily” training the tool on existing apps. The feature aimed to jumpstart the design process by generating UI layouts and components from text prompts. However, it was faced criticism after it mimicked the layout of Apple’s Weather app.

New AI Training Technique Is Drastically Faster, Says Google. Google’s DeepMind researchers have unveiled a new method to accelerate AI training. This significantly reduces the computational resources and time needed to do the work. This approach to the energy-intensive process could make AI development both faster and cheaper, according to a recent research paper. And that could be good news for the environment. “Our approach—multimodal contrastive learning with joint example selection (JEST)—surpasses state-of-the-art models with up to 13 times fewer iterations and 10 times less computation,” the study said.
