A New Computer Monitor Before EOFY?
A computer monitor is a big ticket item to buy during the EOFY sales period. However, choosing the right one can have a big impact on your desk.
Back in June 2020, Shopper Media released an EOFY Shopper Study that found almost one quarter of shoppers planned to buy new tech or office equipment during the EOFY sales period.
Now, we're back to that time of the year again.
Investing your remaining equipment budget before June 30 might soften your tax bills enough to justify the haste, but the endeavour is even more fruitful when you pick up office equipment that enhances your productivity and efficiency.
UK research finds many employees are starved for dedicated space in the WFH environment, and more than one third of respondents have just one PC screen to work on [despite the productivity benefits of multi-monitor set ups].
Computer monitors are one of the biggest ticket items offices will update around EOFY. But the investment is more justifiable when you choose the right one.
According to the Australian Taxation Office Depreciation Rates, the effective life of a computer monitor is four years.
If you're due for a new monitor before June 30, what should you keep in mind?

Five considerations for choosing a computer monitor
?? Picture quality is paramount for many office professionals. Look for a monitor with the right resolution, colour depth, brightness, and contrast ratio. The more you work with professional-quality images and video, the more important your monitor's picture quality is.
?? Know your monitor's refresh rate [how often your screen image is refreshed each second]. One of the common gripes computer users have when they work on monitors with low refresh rates is that their mouse lags. Higher refresh rates can support more fluid pictures too [although the returns will ultimately diminish as the rate rises].
?? Check your monitor's size [measured in inches, diagonally, from one corner to the other]. The right monitor should have the screen real estate you need to win back time squandered toggling tabs to relocate information.
?? Consider a monitor for connectivity and power. Modern monitors can also double as comprehensive hubs for your power and USB connectivity needs.
?? Keep ergonomics in mind too. Look for monitors that freely rotate, tilt, swivel, and elevate. That way you can enjoy the best viewing angle and display orientation for the task at hand.
You don’t need a monitor that does everything [such a monitor doesn’t exist] but you do need one that does everything you need it to do.
