Jeff Bryner brought me on to apree health (Castlight Health at the time) with a promise to give me an opportunity to do security work for security sake, an opportunity to grow a team, an opportunity to help shape a company's security maturity. He delivered.

These past several years have been the most impactful on me professionally.

The platforms built. The technical skills developed. The leadership skills unearthed and honed.

The most impactful on me personally.

The relationships built. The team members trusted. The trials endured.

apree was a place where as a leader I could grow people and give them meaningful opportunities for skills to develop, responsibilities to increase, and real promotions to recognize their hard work and impact. Lives were changed.

It was a place where I was entrusted and enabled to build out new security capabilities. When I started there was no formal Application Security team, no formal Cloud Security team. We grew from four security analysts to ten security engineers spanning CloudSec, AppSec, and SecOps.

These programs got past the teething stages.

CloudSec went from non-existent to implementing a fully terraformed cloud with strong organizational security policies, hardened networking with vpc service controls and egress filtering, data-at-rest enforced encryption meeting FIPS 140-2 Level 3 compliance and strong enforcement of least privileged roles. Self-service apps for less restrictive environments to enable developer velocity. Hardened version control to protect the terraform pipelines. Crazy amounts of internal documentation.

AppSec went from non-existent to having a fully functional secure software development lifecycle with active threat modeling design reviews, static application security testing, dynamic application security testing, world class penetration testing support, 3rd party component scanning, and pipelines blocking buildings on critical findings.

SecOps also matured. Deepening detection and response into containers, across SaaS apps, across clouds. Beginning to automate security responses and reduce SecOps toil. Systemizing on-call with runbooks, checklists, ceremonies.

These programs were built by the incredible teammates we hired and entrusted them to. Thank you Donovan Ellison , Nakirikanti Kiran Kumar , and Oluwaseun Olofinleye for all your work standing up and maturing CloudSec. The programs matured through collaboration and partnership.

None of this would have happened without our teammates. Folks who trusted us in what we were trying to do to make apree security world class. Folks who believed in our empathy and desire to help them succeed at their jobs. Folks who helped us succeed in ours.

Tomorrow is my last day at apree

I'm going to miss the team, the mission, the opportunity for change. I'm excited for my next role. Will share more as I take it on and everything becomes official.

I'm grateful for all we've done and all the team continues to do. I'm cheering from the sidelines for a transformation of health care and for the new Mosaic partnership to take root.

You all have made me better. I'm hopeful I made you a bit better too. Thank you!
