A New Chapter of MS Science

A New Chapter of MS Science

It’s amazing?to see how much has changed in multiple sclerosis (MS) in the last decade. The science continues to evolve. Our understanding of the disease has expanded. We’re entering new?and?uncharted waters?that?hold great promise?for?improving patient care and outcomes.?

These advances were on full display at?the recent?ECTRIMS?congress, as?experts?in neuroscience from?around the world came together virtually to discuss the?MS?disease course and unmet needs of the?community. While?I?missed the energy and camaraderie of a live congress, the discussions about cutting-edge science?were?still?exciting,?and the virtual setting enabled?more people to take part.

My?colleagues?at?@Sanofi?Genzyme?shared emerging?science?about disease activity behind the blood-brain barrier, which shed greater light on chronic smoldering inflammation – implicated as a significant driver of?disease progression in MS.?This was a key theme at ECTRIMS, where?we?convened a panel of experts for a?satellite?symposium?to discuss?concepts of?smoldering MS?in greater detail.?Many thanks to?Drs. Hans Lassman, Assunta Dal-Bianco and Robert Fox?for?presenting.??

We still have significant work to?do,?but?I’m?hopeful as we?continue?to follow the science,?we’ll?change?the way?disease progression?in MS is understood and, hopefully, prevented.??
