It is time for world-wide campaign that not only allows but applauds faster “Continuous Improvement” projects within each company. In the past, a systemic issue could be a lack of applauding our employees who say: "What's so precious about my neck? I'm going to stick it out and make the change (s)." Those are the "Heroes of Everyday Change" campaign we all could have to applaud, not dissuade.
There are pockets where people are told to be quiet, don't make waves, don't rock the boat. Wrong mindset and behavior. Therein lies the systemic rot we don’t want in any organization.
In John Kotter’s new book, “The Heart of Change” he has this line:
"The core issue is the behavior of people who are ignoring how the world is changing, who are frozen in terror by the problems they see, or who do little but bitterly complain."
As no one is a victim of change, but each have active roles in the identifying, shaping, and creating change having some campaign like "Heroes of Everyday Change" which encourages people to report up and solution changes might be useful.
I believe we have an interesting opportunity in front of us right now. Covid 19 has moved all our leadership to exercise some of their “speed of change” muscles that they may not have realized they had. And the ongoing recent protests/riots has shown us what can happen if pockets of changes are not made and let to fester.
Some of our deeper-seeded, longer-term behaviors may now be possible to change throughout our companies.
When I listen to police reporting that they have known about issues for a while and just couldn’t get the agreement or traction to make the changes (not enough urgency and follow through), it drives me to help makes sure we could and do change any similar mindsets for long-term survival of all of our companies – as that is all of our livelihood and in some cases, our life.
