New book about Brexit helps organisations and government officials with their Brexit strategies
Guido Reinke, Ph.D., LL.M., CIPP/E, CISA CRISC, CFE
Independent Brexit Impact Assessment and analysis outlines what Brexit really means, and puts business organizations and citizens back “in control”
LONDON/ Brussels – Brexit: A Political Crisis for Europe: Impact Assessment and Lessons Learnt for the European Union (ISBN:1908585099) by Guido Reinke and Thomas Levermann is the first publication to provide a comprehensive summary of the impact of Brexit on the 35 policy domains as defined in the EU acquis. Written for everybody who wants to understand how Brexit will impact his/ her personal and work life in the foreseeable future, the authors present the key facts needed to finesse an emotional debate. The assessment ranges from the four freedoms of the Single Market – free movement of goods, services, capital and persons – to essential matters like companies & competition, financial services, agriculture, transport, energy, science & research, education, consumer protection, foreign relations, security & defence, and more.
The present book also contains a history of the UK’s involvement with the EU up until Brexit; socio-demographic information about who voted and who did not; and the major economic reports published before and after Brexit. The benefits of European citizenship, which comes with 27 passports which Britain will lose after Brexit, are dauntlessly detailed. This aspect of the book is what takes the polemic out of the debate. It concludes with lessons learnt, identifies the winners and losers of the referendum, and offers a vision of Britain and the European Union in 2026.
Guido Reinke points out that “neither the politicians in Westminster or Brussels nor even the people will decide the fate of Brexit, it is the markets which will have the last word”. The now highly volatile pound, which has dropped in value by more than ten percent since the referendum, a up-creep in inflation, big businesses planning to remove operations to the EU, are all the markets making a preliminary decision. “Politicians are exposed to these market forces like a hot air balloon in a hurricane”, Reinke concludes. Thomas Levermann adds, “The EU needs to take a clear position on how to manage the exit scenarios of potential Member State secessors, and how to respond to the changes in the world that will ensue. Economic prosperity, security and defence, welfare distribution, and common values needs to be addressed by the European institutions to maintain economic growth and political stability.”
Brexit is the UK’s biggest political transformation programme in more than two generations. It wants a clearly defined strategy, a detailed plan of execution, and a political team that is confident and competent to deliver. This book provides a necessary tool and full-spectrum knowledge needed to make the best of what Chris Patten, the former Governor of Hong Kong, calls “a British tragedy”.
