As the amount of goods shipped annually grows year over year, so does the number of trucks on the road. This presents unforeseen complications, with one being truck parking infrastructure. According to the American Trucking Association, drivers spend nearly one hour a day just looking for parking. This wasted time results in $5,500 lost in yearly compensation per driver and leads to a decrease in the overall efficiency of the supply chain. A stark issue in our infrastructure is the shortage of availability when it comes to safe truck parking. Often, drivers have to venture several miles out of their way to find safe parking that has the space for their trucks. The industry has many drivers who have reported safety as a concern when designated parking overnight is not an option. Fortunately, help is on the way. After refusal to be heard in 2021, a $755 million truck parking bill is gaining traction and is trending upwards in recent weeks. The Truck Parking Safety Improvement Act comprehensively aids in the relief of safety concerns and inefficient time spent searching for spots. The new bill, which advanced to the floor of the House of Representatives, has been pushed hard for years by both the American Trucking Association and the Owner-Operators Independent Drivers Association. The passing of this bill will give drivers safe and convenient options for parking along major highways and serve as an avenue to greatly reduce driver detention.
