New Beginnings

The black ocean surges in the darkness

Crashing her waves upon the land

Hissing in retreat only to gather again

The skies myriad of sparkling eyes gaze downward

Bemused by the anger of her age old sister

The old man, retires before the breaking of dawn

Cold air biting the soft flesh of my face

The lifeless beachfront whistles a sorrowful tune

All have taken refuge from the winter night

Trance like I watch and wait in anticipation

For what I cannot tell

Perhaps for life’s next move

Surreal suspended animation prevails

The sky wakens and the ocean illuminates

Heavenly light appearing from everywhere

Colours replacing monochrome voids

Shimmering blues and greens with dancing white horses

Tranquillity subdues the turmoil

The lure of hope for the new day

She washes all remnants of days past

Along with the footprints of my very existence

The mist from her breath settles on my lips

As a soft salty kiss

She grooms herself before the deluge of impending humanity

The excess of modernization degrading her timeless beauty

Commercialism mocking her integrity

Neon her new garish jewelry

No wish to witness the onslaught

I turn away

Replacing her comforting smell

With the stench of burning fossil fuel

Consumed by the very teeming masses I wish to avoid
