A new beginning

The speed at which artificial intelligence is advancing is staggering. No one wants to be left behind. Tech giants are battling to dominate the industry, startups are trying to integrate AI into their products to attract investors, and traditional service companies are attempting to predict what will happen, seeking some sense of reassurance: “we're in an industry with a low probability of AI impacting our business.” Such statements are akin to thinking 30 years ago, “we're in an industry with a low probability of the internet impacting our business.”

It's undeniable that a business like ours, which generates most of its revenue from selling people’s time, is threatened as AI and agents begin to match humans in programming skills.

However, at Alternova, we believe this is the best time to create new things. The next five years will likely be a golden age for developing new products and services. Doing this with AI assistance, addressing the needs of a world struggling to adapt to AI, ensuring big companies feel secure, and making AI an opportunity rather than an existential threat. We spend much more energy thinking about all the work ahead than worrying about the risks technology might pose to our business.

Some of the things we are focusing on:

- We have been evaluating how to combine the lessons we've learned over the past five years. We believe it's possible to create a system with all the essential functionalities to start a digital health and wellness company or project that can be delivered in weeks instead of months and at a fraction of the cost of development from scratch. We are building it and will have more news in the coming months.

- By the end of this year, we should be operating our first FinTech product in Guatemala, in partnership with a great ally. This is a bet on entering a new sector, using our experience working in highly regulated environments. We are very excited about this, and once we are operating, we will be publishing more information.

- In the next three months, we should be receiving our SOC2 Type 1 certification and in the first quarter of 2025, SOC2 Type 2. We aim to operate a cloud environment that meets all technical and security requirements so that companies in the health, wellness, and financial sectors can trust us with the storage and operation of their applications.

- Personally, I am working on understanding what a company that is native in using automation and artificial intelligence in all its processes looks like. From the simplest to the most complex. Just as today all company roles use the internet, in the near future all company roles will involve automation flows and AI agents. We must make this happen.

- Creativity and ingenuity above technology: One of my predictions about the world in the AI era is that anyone can do anything if they have access to the resources to pay for the necessary processing that AI agents require. This puts us in a scenario where we will have more of everything good and bad that exists today on the internet. The only antidote to this is to also do many things ourselves, but in a way that they become transcendent experiences for users. This can only be achieved with high doses of creativity.

For this reason, we have decided to pause Project Hope (our educational video game about depression) while we better understand the vision with which we want to build it, as we encountered deep philosophical questions during its development and need to think through our strategy more thoroughly.

A strategy that apparently will be aimed at making a strong entry into the world of education using interactive media. But how much do we want to educate vs. how much do we want to entertain? Good question…

The introduction of these five pillars into our strategy, we hope, will lead us to achieve our next business milestone and, more importantly, position us in the next five years as an independent company that produces its own technology, has a knowledge base leveraged on AI, and can thrive in a world we all know is coming, but don’t exactly know how it will be. This is a new beginning…

Thanks for sharing, Ricky. The reality is that no one knows exactly how AI will impact their business, and there’s no reliable playbook for successfully navigating this challenge. The best approach is to experiment and learn as we go. While many companies and jobs will be affected, I believe even more opportunities will emerge.
