The new Asset Management Mobile App for D365SCM. Is this the first practical example of ODOP?

One Dynamics One Platform (ODOP) focuses on the convergence of Finance and Operations apps with the Microsoft Power Platform , enabling customers to take full advantage of #PowerPlatform with each Finance & Operations environment.

?The Vision has never been to try and merge the code.?For a start, Finance & Operations (F&O) and CE/CRM are built on two different code bases. To try and bring them together would be far too difficult and disruptive (if it was even technically possible?).

?

How the ODOP Vision can become reality is by enabling them to "snap together" in the same environment in #PPAC (Power Platform Admin Centre), with the same reality across user personas, such as:

?One Administrator

  • One User Experience
  • One User Runtime
  • One Insights

?Using tools such as:

  • ?Dual-Write
  • Virtual Entity
  • Connector
  • One Batch
  • LCS and, of course, PPAC itself:

?In the Finance & Operations cross-app capabilities section of the Wave 2, 2022 Release 2 plan, strides were made toward enabling a one-transaction developer experience in which there is a true transactional consistency between F&O apps and 微软 Dataverse.

  1. ?Dataverse virtual tables for F&O apps will have improved performance and reliability.
  2. ?Developers will be able to select multiple legal entities to filter event registrations for F&O apps business events and data events.
  3. ?The Finance and Operations batch framework will be converged with Dataverse jobs, maintaining a single scheduler across the platforms.

?

So far…. so enabling.

?

But now, with the introduction of the ?? Asset Management Mobile App for Microsoft Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management (#SCM), we move from 'enablement' to 'enaction'.??♀?

?How?

?Because unlike its predecessor, the now-deprecated Finance & Operations (Dynamics 365) mobile app for the Asset Management mobile workspace…

…the new Asset Management mobile app is built as a ?Canvas app in PowerApps!!! ???

?

It doesn't require any additional #licences to use.?Instead, it leverages the security roles already establishes in SCM to grant the appropriate users access to the maintenance request and/or job management functions as needed, such as:

  • quickly filing maintenance requests, by:
  • scanning a barcode,
  • entering notes, and
  • submitting photos

By way of the:

  • Team member licence for the maintenance request, and
  • Activity user licence for the work order flow.

?

At the time of the introductory #TechTalk (see link in comments), the following features weren't supported:

  • The ability to extend or customise the app
  • The ability to use the app to set recurring maintenance items

?Also unsupported at that time but on the #roadmap were:

  • Offline capabilities
  • The ability to create a work order from the app and for it to be scheduled straight away

?

?Does the fact that #LowCode / #CitizenDevelopers are 'dis'-abled from extending or customising this app mean that it isn't truly the ODOP breakthrough I've been waiting for as an #ERP Solution Architect?

?? I think not.

?

We mustn't forget that for many, the whole #Dynamics365 package provides a pre-defined solution that does meet their needs at time of deployment.?

?Exposing them to a mobile app that aligns with what can be delivered using the Power Platform could encourage them to seriously consider, as their needs change and evolve over time, progressing vertically downwards ?? to develop their own replacement mobile app, rather than feeling they have no choice but to 'go up' and engage a third party provider.

Upward Vertical movement isn't the only option

Ultimately, my own Vision for #ODOP would see in the same way we're told through Microsoft Learn that "if a standard #Dataverse table almost meets your business needs, you can use it as the basis for a new table", that F&O Supply Chain Management users would be able to apply the same logic and have the ability to use this new Asset Management Mobile App as a 'Reference Design'.

?

After all, as Wikipedia defines it:

"The main purpose of reference design is to support companies in development of next generation products using latest technologies.?The reference product is proof of the platform concept and is usually targeted for specific applications.?Reference design packages enable a fast track to market, thereby cutting costs and reducing risk in the customer's integration project.".

I rest my case. ??
