Polymeric solutions for a sustainable future

In order to achieve net-zero by 2050, according to a 2023 Report from the world-leading authority on climate science, Climate Action Tracker: ‘wind and solar sources in electricity generation will need to reach 57 – 78 percent by 2030, and 79 – 96 percent by 2050.’ In 2022, this figure sat at 12 percent. Needless to say, a colossal scale-up of these industries is anticipated over the upcoming decades.

Polymeric Technology Supports Transition to 79 – 96% Renewable Energy by 2050. Given the important role wind power plays in the transition to net zero, it is absolutely critical that windfarms are maintained to an excellent standard. Otherwise, damaged wind power assets may needlessly be decommissioned and replaced; the process of which comes with a hefty carbon footprint as well as considerable financial expenditure.

New apprentice scheme aims to boost prospects for young people

The UK government has announced a new growth and skills levy which will replace the existing apprenticeship levy and include new foundation apprenticeships. The new apprenticeships, announced by the Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and the Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson, will give young people a route in to careers in critical sectors, allowing them to earn a wage while developing vital skills.

The new levy will also allow funding for shorter apprenticeships, giving learners and employers more flexibility over their training than under the existing system, where apprenticeships must run for at least 12 months. The training eligible for funding under the new levy will develop over time, guided by Skills England’s assessment of the priority needs for skills.

How motorsport innovation is driving clean energy

Motorsport is known for its relentless pursuit of innovation, where performance, weight, and efficiency are pushed to the absolute limits. While these developments are often born out of the need to gain fractions of a second on the track, the technology that powers racing cars frequently finds new applications in other industries. One such example is how advanced materials and manufacturing techniques, originally honed in motorsport, are now driving clean energy solutions. Graphite Additive Manufacturing has seen this crossover first-hand through their work with Intelligent Energy, where motorsport expertise has contributed to the development of lightweight and highly efficient enclosures and casing components for their hydrogen fuel cells, which power drones.

At the heart of this collaboration is Sinterworx G4, a material originally developed for high-performance motorsport applications. Racing teams demand materials that are not only lightweight but also incredibly tough, capable of withstanding extreme forces and conditions without failure. G4 was born from these requirements and has proven to be an ideal solution for Intelligent Energy’s hydrogen fuel cell enclosures.
