The new Age of Dumb Phones!!!

Of course I'm just provoking you guys to think about it, I don't believe Smartphones will become Dumb Phones, maybe they will become even smarter when they learn how to use their resources even better.
Current limited Smartphone resources are:
- Battery
- Storage
- Processing
- Screen size
- Screen definition
- Camera definition
- Audio power
- etc.
The first 3 resources are the most end user sensitive resources, users die to have more battery or more storage available. And when a specific Application is slow, they get crazy waiting.
So, what if the Network could help the optimization of these resources?
This is exactly one of the value propositions of 5G, provide enough throughput, availability and speed that allows "thin clients" such as Mobile Browsers to operate likewise your In Apps.
If the network is fast enough you don't need to store/cache content on device.
If the network is fast enough you don't need to process actions inside the device.
Now, if we reduce the demand of processing, this reduces the pressure over battery consumption.
Conclusion, 5G can drive devices to be less resources intensive.

9 年The focus should be broader as we are moving to "Dumb Devices" as D2D, T2T (Things to Things) leading to IoT and Ultra-Smart devices that will require more power of processing, more speed, better cameras and the ability to "talk" to other devices at different levels (passive or active). Devices will have different purposes and they will be able to create their own level of "smartness" depending on their use, and for that they will have to be extremely smart to identify other devices and adjust the level of "smartness" that will be expected from them. As an example, you will be able to have a tool tag that could be defined to operate as a dumb device, but when required, it could also operate as a tracking device and trigger security devices and send pictures in case of an emergency. Why phones? The ability to have conversations through the devices will become a feature, or who knows if the devices will interact with other devices that will have the ability to provide conversations, like at your car, at your house, at your pulse device (what we call watch today). We moved very quickly from a voice centric network to a data one. Now we are moving, even faster, to a mixed network with voice, data and information exchanged between things (IoT). The network will contribute to the speed, reliability, storage and access. In parallel, devices will become smarter and require more power or even distributed power in an adaptive and exponential way.

9 年I hope we never stop the innovation around it, this is my life and passion. So, as soon as we have new forms of communication we will always need people to develop the business around it.
