"NEVERS" IN FACE-TO-FACE PRESENTATIONS
A client wanted tips on what to avoid in presentations. Which of these "nevers" do you see presenters doing?
.?????NEVER USE NOTES Be well-prepared and integrate your notes into your presentation materials, like flip charts, whiteboards, PowerPoint, video, etc. Your notes then become a natural part of your presentation instead of a separate reference.
.?????NEVER START LATE Your presentation is important enough to start on time. Respect the punctual attendees by starting as scheduled. To reward timeliness, offer small gifts to those who are punctual. Don’t draw attention to latecomers, just continue your presentation.
.?????NEVER GO OVERTIME Build a reputation for punctuality by finishing on time. It’s more important that your audience learns something valuable than you covering every single point. If you’re running long, highlight the key features and refer the audience to additional notes for later.
.?????NEVER MENTION TIME Your audience is generally aware the time, so don't draw their attention to it. Use a clock at the back of the room, keep your watch handy but discreet, and monitor time without making it obvious.
.?????NEVER APOLOGISE Avoid unnecessary apologies as they can draw attention to things the audience might not have noticed. If something unexpected happens, handle it gracefully and keep the presentation going. Confidence in navigating hiccups is appreciated by audiences.
.?????NEVER ALLOW FAILURE DURING PARTICIPATION Focus on positive reinforcement. Engage with those willing to participate. Encourage all contributions with positive feedback and gently guide the discussion by asking thought-provoking questions.
.?????NEVER CRITICISE Foster a positive and inclusive environment for idea-sharing. Be candid but not aggressive. Offer constructive suggestions by asking, “Have you considered...?” This approach encourages learning and innovation.
.?????NEVER POINT Use open hand gestures to engage with your audience more effectively. It’s a more inviting and less confrontational way to communicate.
.?????NEVER AVOID AN ADVERSE REACTION Acknowledge differing opinions constructively. Turn them into opportunities for group discussion.
.??NEVER DISPLAY AIDS WHEN NOT IN USE Avoid distractions by turning off or covering presentation aids when not in use. This helps keep the audience focused on the current topic.
.??NEVER STAY IN ONE SPOT Keep your presentation dynamic by moving around. This prevents predictability and keeps the audience engaged.

.??NEVER CREATE PHYSICAL BARRIERS Remove obstacles like lecterns or desks that could inhibit communication. Stand to the side, inviting audience interaction and participation.
