It Is Never Too Late!

While most people were in college and getting their degree, I was out selling my face off and making great money doing it. I did the college thing for a while, but when I got the taste of earning real money, there was no way I could focus on being in a classroom. That decision was made when I was 22, and it would not be until I was 37 for me to understand the impact.
In no way can I say my career has been halted or even held back by my decision not to finish college. In all honesty at 37, I have more years of experience than people 10 - 15 years my senior in diverse industries and verticals. However, this year, I finally figured out what my parents were trying to tell me when they kept telling me to finish school when you are young.
My step-son just got home after being at Navy Training to become a U.S. Navy Corpsman, and one day, a "Doc." My wife and I could not be more proud of him and his decision to serve our incredible country. Now home, he is in the reserves; it was time to get him into college. This was reasonably understood when he left, but getting back, he was all of a sudden not that sure when he wanted to start. Then he dropped the bomb on my wife I had feared since I was 22 and leaving Columbus, OH to head home to Chicago when he said, "Michael did not finish college and look he is doing great!"
Now before I go any further, I should explain that my wife has three, YES THREE, Masters degrees. She has taught as a College Professor for several years, and still very involved in the Education world. So needless to say my path is not a great topic of conversation, especially when it has to do with her baby boy. LOL!
When I heard Anthony's comment, I knew I needed to step in an save his life. Like literally, my wife is Korean, and Anthony's comment was a life-ending comment that I needed to help with. So with only a split second to act before Elena gave him a look and killed him, I said, "I'll make you a deal and go back to college to complete my degree if you go with me, deal?" To my surprise, he agreed and stayed alive.
Five weeks ago, Anthony and I both started back in college, taking online courses as we both work fulltime. I was honestly a little nervous, but it has been amazing. Getting back into a class has been so rewarding and helpful to my work. It has opened my eyes again to the importance of education and training. Plus it has built a bond between my son and me as we have a topic of conversation to share.
My point here is that no matter how successful you have been in your career if you have put off your degree, certification, or some other training STOP! Today like right now enroll in a training, online school, or something. I can guarantee you will be so happy you did.
