Never saw it coming...

(Yes, it’s real and she’s ok, thankfully.)
What innovation could disrupt your job instantly?
Who or what is your industry’s Uber/Air BnB?
Uber destroyed the taxi business by being smarter than the law and won the right to do business nationwide, even in New York, where a taxi medallion used to be hundreds of thousands of dollars, now basically worthless.
Air BnB has blown up the hotel/inn industry…remember Jesus was born in stable 2000 years ago, because “there was no room at the inn”.
All with free, instantly downloadable apps.
I’ve been reading that in 2020 Uber will be run with self-driving cars? Thousands of people will be put out of work, forever, instantly.
In fact, I think in the future you’ll have to PAY more for human interaction, banks have done this for years and if the tech is good enough, people don’t care.
Even self-driving Ubers don’t happen by 2020, it is coming.
When robots become cheaper than people, people are in trouble.
Is a robot lawyer-powered by Google far off? For certain mundane tasks, my OWN Lawyer suggests I use Legalzoom.com!
Innovation is a destroyer of jobs and it forces people to find better jobs. As a friend of mine once said...
“We all used to use outhouses, I don’t hear anyone wanting to go back to those days”.
I also think, the $15 minimum wage and mandatory health insurance paid for by employers, while noble ideas, will accelerate the rise of the robots, because many industries will find ways to replace people with technology.
History doesn’t repeat, but it does rhyme and business will always replace people with technology, if they can.
With my company, I already use Upwork.com for several tasks (people BID for the work at a fixed price) and we use technology to automate every possible task to minimize my employee expense.
I’m just real about it and candidly, I believe I should be, I’m in the TECHNOLOGY business for goodness sake.
Video killed the radio star, the DVR killed the 30 second commercial, just as technology replaced toll booth operators, cashiers, travel agents (Expedia/Priceline) reporters (robots already write articles for the AP) and finally, when’s the last time you needed a phone operator? I think in real estate, the transactional escrow industry is probably next to be disrupted.
With my industry, I think SD Wan, Google Fi and Software as a Service (Salesforce, Google Apps ect) have permanently changed the game. SD Wan allows companies to replace expensive MPLS networks, Google Fi combines T-Mobile and Sprint on (1) cellular network and SAAS because of inexpensive, reasonably high-quality internet connections, the applications that run business can work almost anywhere, eliminating the need for expensive servers.
Those same SAAS applications are available instantly, on demand, allowing smaller, more nimble companies to access technology only the Fortune 500 could afford a few years back.
I’m just thankful most of my competitors aren’t adapting quickly enough (hopefully we are!!).
I think the most dangerous thought, is “my job could never be done by a robot”.
What’s your industry not see coming?

5 年This was written in 2016 and he's correct that real estate is primed for next disruption! Just research real estate transactions without agents. Redfin is moving forward as many others.
Retired, but still looking for work
8 年Innovation is what got us here today. Do you really want to go back to cassettes and floppy discs. The more we innovate, the better we will be. Disruptions happen, but that is part of how we learn. Very rarely is it destructive. Time to get moving into the new world or be left behind. Those who put their head in the sand will be buried by the innovation "storm" of new ideas and upgrades.

Creative powers beyond those of mere mortals...
8 年Nice article. Right on the money. Innovation isn't just "disruption" -- it can also be "destruction".
