Who Has Your Back?

I still remember the first time I was invited to a networking meeting.??

It was October 2002, two years after setting up my own business.?

I got up at the crack of dawn, really not knowing what to expect. I arrived at 6.30 in the morning, to a room full of business owners, buzzing with activity, everyone in animated conversation.?

It was a bit too early in the morning for me, and the experience was a little overwhelming, but one thing stood out for me….

There was a core group of business owners within the group who were working closely together: The real estate agent, the mortgage broker and the lawyer. They were all in? partnership.

Every time the real estate agent sold a property, their client needed a lawyer to negotiate the purchase. And for almost every purchase, they needed a mortgage broker to help them access finance. It also worked in the other direction. The lawyer would have a client where a family member passed away and they needed a real estate agent to handle the sale of the property.?

What was it that made their partnership so successful?

They had a process.

They knew they were meeting at a fixed time and location every week to review business opportunities.. They were looking out for each other, spotting opportunities, actively supporting one another. It concentrated their minds.?

They could of course have networked informally. They could have skipped the weekly meetings and told each other “If I meet anyone who needs your services, I’ll let you know”. But without structure, nothing ever happens. There is too much going on, people are distracted, no-one remembers to refer.?

Ensuing you have a process is the difference between success and failure when it comes to JVs.??

Having a proven process has enabled me to form over 300 JV partnerships, and helped me manage over 20 launches that have generated millions in revenue.?
