…Never Lose Infinite Hope

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was designed to honor the activist whose non-violent leadership of the civil rights movement ultimately led to the passage of the Civil Rights Acts of 1964, outlawing discrimination in public accommodations, facilities, and employment, and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. His efforts to eliminate discrimination and realize that “all men are created equal” is at the core of our Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) pursuits as we create an environment at EPIC where there is equality of opportunity and fairness for all.

This Monday, January 16th, alongside our nation, EPIC will honor the life and legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. He believed that although we must accept finite disappointment, we must never lose infinite hope.?We encourage you to take time to reflect on the insight of this great leader and societal influencer whose motivational messages live on.

Martin and Coretta Scott met and fell in love in the early 1950s in Boston while King was earning his doctorate at Boston University and Mrs. King had a fellowship at the New England Conservatory of Music. The 1965 Freedom Plaza honors the Kings along with 65 other local civil rights leaders active between 1950 and 1970.?

This month, The Embrace, a 22-foot-high bronze statue seen below, was unveiled.?It was designed by artist Hank Willis Thomas and MASS Design Group ?to honor the teamwork and love between the Kings. It specifically illustrates their reaction when Reverend King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.?"People underestimate the power of women and underestimate the power of black women and their influence on society," said Imari Paris Jeffries, who leads Embrace Boston, the non-profit that raised $8 million to create the sculpture and an additional $2.5 million to preserve it.

As we embark on a new year, be encouraged and hopeful. Dr. King famously said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, “What are you doing for others?” John Hahn challenges us, “Go out and elevate individuals and communities, particularly those in need, and help them raise their voices in the process.”
