Social Media News

Everybody has those days: ICYMI, Facebook, Instagram, and Threads were down yesterday. The major outage affected 500K+ users and lasted more than four hours. Meta is back up and running, but you can always check the status?here.?

Discourse on Florida and Texas social media laws continues: The government can’t regulate speech on social media platforms…or can it? This meaty opinion piece, which argues social media companies are not the same as public utilities, explores whether content moderation should be left to social media companies or the government.

LinkedIn’s suggested posts are a marketing WIN: A new LinkedIn algorithm update will show your best posts to targeted users for months, or even years. In this LinkedIn newsletter, Tim Jurka—who coins himself as the Bearer of Good News at LinkedIn—writes, “We want to match people to the best content for them and what they need at that moment...One way we're doing this is through testing suggested posts – content served to a member that is personalized based on their professional identity, actions, and goals on the platform. The benefit of this is that professionals who come to LinkedIn will see content that is fresh, insightful, and richly contextualized.”

Google News

This just in! Google's new spam policies:?Just yesterday, Google announced the March 2024 core update. This update includes three new spam policies: expired domain abuse, scaled content abuse, and site reputation abuse. Google writes, “Sites that violate our spam policies may rank lower in results or not appear in results at all. If affected by a spam manual action, site owners will receive a notice through their registered Search Console account and can apply to have the action reconsidered.”

Google wifes up Reddit (in the form of a $60M deal): Google will mine Reddit’s online discussions to train its AI models while Reddit will use Google’s AI to improve its internal site search. Google writes, “This partnership will facilitate more content-forward displays of Reddit information that will make our products more helpful for our users and make it easier to participate in Reddit communities and conversations.”

Writing on the web: This news is for Google Chrome users. “Help me write” will, well, do just that. You can use the feature to help you start writing or refine something you’ve already written. Click here to learn how to activate it.

Ad reporting revamp: Updates in Google Analytics will consolidate all advertising and publisher reporting into one centralized advertising section. Suh-weet!

Friendly Reminder

Cookies will be completely phased out by Q3 this year. Yowza. If you do not yet have a first-party data strategy, here are three quick recommendations:

  • Leverage your website for lead capture with optimized forms and enticing lead magnets. Pro tip: ensure you’re adding leads to segmented lists to enable strategic follow-up sequences.
  • Enable event-based tracking with GA4 to gather insights into user behaviors and interactions. Don't forget to refine your tactics based on your findings.
  • Run a survey with your current clientele to both engage with your audience and collect first-party data doing so.
  • Utilize contextual targeting with Google PPC ad campaigns. If you have zero idea what that means, you're in good company. Here’s a great example of contextual targeting: using “bikes” as a topic and “cycling” as a Display/Video/Search keywords will enable your ads to be displayed on online content that matches either.
