Never Give Up !! Tough Situations Build Strong people

It was a sunny weekend afternoon, there were no pending tasks- everything was set and aligned at place. I was confused as where to invest my time. Suddenly some family friends came over home for lunch. We had good time together and then somebody suggested to watch the Movie 83. For once I was like, what type of name it is (as I’m not a big cricket fan). Then someone clarified it’s the movie made on India winning the cricket world cup for the first time.

We went for the movie and it actually inspired me to the core. The character that Kapil Dev Sir played in the movie is commendable.

Here, I would like to share some of my insights from the movie on leadership :

1. Determination towards your Goal

Leadership is all about your determination towards your goal, only then you would be able to guide your team to achieve the same. The famous line from the movie when journalist asked Mr. Kapil Dev, Why have you come to England? The prompt reply from the Leader was “We here to win World Cup”. What else we here for?

It’s like having a clarity about your goal n being focused. And that’s what keeps you on your path to focus.

2. Never Settle for Less- Don’t underestimate Yourself

You generally loose when you start doubting your capabilities and settle yourself for less. Your standards and thought process should always be high and that what make a Leader inspirational.

There was a scene in the movie where the fellow teammates lose their morale even before trying, and then the leader took up the charge.

3. Actions Speak Louder than Words

Ignoring the criticism and channelizing your emotional power to your strength is the key to success. People around you, may demoralize you, may not have the same confidence that you have in yourself.

Everyone around the Team was criticising them” Good for nothing”, No one believed in them expect the Leader (Kapil Dev). There were too much criticism published in the newspaper, Team wanted Kapil to respond to that and he simply replied “I know what I have to do with these rumours, and that’s what I’m doing- he was wiping his shoes shoes with that newspaper.

The statement was” we will release any statement rather we will answer them on the field with our game.

4. Balancing your Emotions

Counselling plays an important role in anyone’s life, especially when you are going through rough times. Words do magic if said properly at the right time. We cannot feel the pain other person is going through, but definitely can help them to get out of that pain and balance between professional and personal life.

Kapil Dev’s short conversation with Ballu “keep your personal problems aide, the whole world is having an eye on us today” made a big difference.

5. Setting Standards & Feedback

It’s not always about inspiring and motivating your team all the time to achieve the goal, a leader himself has to prove and set standards for his team. Giving proper feedback also plays an important role.

In the movie, Kapil dev first set an example to his team by winning the match single handily and breaking world record- that brought more confidence in the team.

He set clear expectations that everyone must play beyond their capabilities, if they want to win.

6. Keeping Low Note

A Leader is always down to earth, keeping low note and always believes in Actions rather than speeches and words.

In the final match, whole team was demotivated after half time- Kapil Dev just simplified the things and build the confidence again in the team that 183 runs may be low, but we have to stop the opposition team from chasing it- “it’s not impossible, if we fight for every single run”

And, that simplification and determination created History !!

Conclusion

A Leader is Motivational, inspirational, Risk taking and many more. There were many other areas or qualities of a Leader which can be seen in the movie, but I picked up some points which inspired me personally and made me more focused and determined towards achieving my goals in life.

When I started writing this article first, I was not sure I would be able to complete it in a short span of time- its only because I was determined to write and portray my thought process. I just tried to channelize my positive energy in writing this article.

In simplified words- “Mann ki Baat kehni thi” Get Inspired, Get Learnings !!
