In our last Contagious Leadership Podcast Ep. 73, we had Burnout Recovery Expert and speaker, Sarah Ross , join us in a conversation on how to prevent burnout this year.
Sarah’s story is truly captivating and an emotional one. From the outside, Sarah seemed to be living the perfect Instagram life. She had a great job that allowed her to travel and experience ‘the finer things’, and she looked like she was having an amazing time doing so.
Although she had all the perks that most people desire in a career, she found herself in a very dark place. Her busy career kept her on the move but at the cost of her mental health.?
Sarah soon found herself experiencing an unhealthy amount of migraines, faking smiles, pushing herself to exhaustion, beyond stressed, and ultimately experiencing burnout.
She had gotten into such a dark place that she decided she wanted to end it all.
She took a severance package with her company and made a plan to live out her last 6 months on earth.
She planned to travel some more, took acting/speaking classes, and tried to enjoy her last months.
Nothing was going to change her mind until she took a trip to Vietnam, where she spent her time in an orphanage for disabled children.?
On one particular day, she encountered a sick little girl who was facing her last day on earth. She could tell that the little girl was fighting for her life and it wasn’t until that moment, that Sarah realized she had a reason to breathe. Seeing a little girl that was sent to an orphanage to live out her last days, who had nothing, and was begging for just one more day, showed Sarah that there is a reason to stay on this earth.?
So Sarah decided to educate individuals and teams on how to recover and avoid burnout.
What is Burnout?
Burnout can be displayed in a number of ways and it effects your physical, emotional, and/or mental health by signs of decreased motivation, lowered performance, and negative attitudes towards yourself or others.
Anyone can experience burnout, but if you’re in a high-stress position at work, chances are, you may have found yourself experiencing burnout more often than not.
Often times, we find ourselves dealing with one stressful situation after another, without giving ourselves a break. This can lead to poor physical, emotional, and mental health.
“You're trying to do marathons on genetics that are meant to do sprints”
Sarah tells us that our bodies aren't meant to endure stressful situations back to back on a consistent basis.
Your mind is constantly asking yourself “Am I safe? Or can I get safe?” This is why it’s imperative to give yourself a reason to feel safe and not endure constant stress.
When your body realizes you’re safe, it’ll stop producing stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol.
That’s why it’s important to find certain pleasures in your life that allow you to take a break from stress and recover/prevent burnout.

How to Identify Burnout
Burnout can easily creep up on you without you realizing what it is. That’s why it’s crucial to be able to identify the warning signs and take action as soon as you begin to or are experiencing burnout.
Sarah created this simple questionnaire that allows you to identify what level of burnout you may be experiencing.
If you would like to take the quiz, check out the link here.
Answer these questions as honestly as you can (YES or NO):

Once you’ve answered these questions, count up the amount of Yes’s you have.
If you have 1-3 yes’s then you are in the clear and are fairly balanced. There is no need to make any major changes in your life.?
If you have 4-7 yes’s, you may be at risk of burnout. You may be feeling stressed, have anxiety, or be experiencing depression. Try to change one thing in your routine this week that will give you joy.
If you have 8-12 yes’s, you are currently burning out. It’s time to start taking care of yourself. Sarah’s Reset, Recharge and Thrive and the Burnout Freedom Formula? can help you combat this state of burnout. You should be looking to make lifestyle changes that combat your stress, anxiety, or depression. For more assistance with this, contact Sarah and book a Burnout Awareness Check as soon as you can.
If you have 13-15 yes’s, you are BURNT OUT. Chances are, your life is being impacted in a way that isn’t helping your emotional, physical, or mental state. It’s time to get serious about your burnout recovery. You can schedule time with Sarah for a free 30 minute Burnout Awareness Check call using the link here.
Tips to Recover from Burnout
Do not, I repeat, do not try to change every aspect of your life. It’s important to make small changes that will get you to a happier, less stressful place in life. Making gradual steps to move yourself out of burnout is going to help you get with a smooth transition from burnout to living a blissful life.
Here are some things to try and regulate before making major life changes:
You want to get yourself to the point where your brain feels safe or is getting to a safe place. As you gradually get yourself into this safe place, your brain will actually create happy hormones such as serotonin, dopamine, endorphins, and oxytocin.
A great affirmation to speak into existence while going through burnout is: I am safe.
Interesting enough, the brain will respond positively to this and help you create more of those happy hormones.

The Importance of Speaking Up
When we’re going through a difficult time, whether it’s depression, anxiety, burnout or whatever it may be, it’s important to seek the help you need.?
Often times, the people around you don’t know you’re going through something unless you allow yourself to be vulnerable about the topic with them.
You don’t always have to go through something alone and you’d be surprised at the amount of people who are willing to help you during a tough time. Your family members, friends, and therapist are always options to pursue. If you don’t have a therapist, it may be helpful to make an appointment with one to see if you enjoy that type of support.
Sarah didn’t plan on telling anyone about her plan to end her life, even after she decided she wasn’t going to purse that anymore. She wanted to give people a Reason to Breath and finally realize that she could inspire people to speak up by telling her own story.?
It is okay to seek help and speak up about what you’re struggling with.
