Never delegate your marketing completely – here’s why

Today I want to ask you to consider your relationship with marketing; specifically, how it’s an extension of your mission, your business, and you. So many times over the last 20 plus years of working with women entrepreneurs, I’ve met people who have said,?“I hate marketing. In fact, I just want to delegate it completely. I don’t want to have anything to do with marketing.”?

This is most likely because they (and maybe you too?) have some beliefs that are not supportive of marketing, and this requires a very important mindset shift:?you never ever take your finger completely off the pulse of the marketing controls.

There are just some things in business that you cannot abdicate or delegate completely; you still need to have some control. Marketing is one of those things.

Marketing, while being quite possibly the most necessary and significant aspect of your business, is not something that someone else can do entirely for you. It still requires you to some extent because?it is very important that your essence be in the marketing. As you hire a marketing manager, marketing director, a whole marketing team (or what I call Leverage your marketing in?my book), you will still need to be a?little bit?involved.

Even though you will one day be free of driving the execution of your marketing, it will still require a bit of you…because your business has a soul.

The soul of your business is originated by you – by your passion, by your charisma, by your identity, by?who you are.?And when you’re present and involved in the marketing, people resonate with the essence that is YOU within that entity.

Conversely, when you’ve completely abdicated the marketing strategy and the voice in the marketing, it feels canned and lifeless, as if Elvis had left the building.

I follow a few people who have completely delegated their marketing. Because I know who they are and I know their heart, when I read their marketing,?I can feel something is missing…it doesn’t resonate at all. And I feel like most people can feel that…they just know.

However,?when the essence of you is still in the marketing voice, people feel that?even though you might not be doing most of the marketing.

Keep your finger on the pulse of your marketing:

As the business owner, you must be part of every big marketing decision and overall message.?(I’ve seen so many people do that wrong, and I would not want to see you make the same mistake.) When your essence is part of the foundation, you can have someone else execute on the marketing directives for you.

You don’t have to get bogged down in details, come up with all of the tactics, or worry about how it’s all going to be delivered or when. But the key is to stay?involved.

Here’s the mindset shift that will make this possible: you’re not waiting for the day when you’re no longer doing any marketing.?It will always require you to some degree for it to work, but it can absolutely be leveraged so that you can delegate most of it and use your time to focus on exponential growth activities.
