When "Dara" started got her consulting job in December, I said three things:
1. Congratulations.
2. You can be laid off any time so keep looking for another job.
3. Save money every month, your paycheck can end whenever.
Dara kinda sorta believed me, but not really. I understand: She's never been terminated. She still had the "do great work and your job is safe" mentality. Which is a lie.
Jerry was a Senior VP at Dara's firm. Jerry is also a leader in Dara's professional organization. He's given her great advice and, importantly, he's introduced her to other senior leaders. Jerry is both a mentor and a sponsor.
Last week, Jerry called a meeting for the professional organization: to say that he'd been laid off, effective immediately, from Dara's firm. Everyone was shocked because Jerry was so awesome. Just last month, the CEO praised Jerry's work in a company-wide email.
Dara asked to get her resume updated again. And she's started looking at to other opportunities. I didn't say "I told you so" to Dara. Life said it for me.
Stay ready to get another job at all times. Never count any firm more than you count on you.
