NEVER ASSUME

Yesterday I met up with an old friend that is now back to being the happy person they were one year ago. This is when she was very pleased to know that the hospital had finally arranged a date to carry out replacing her worn out knee with a replacement one. Initially all went well carryng out the excersises to help the new knee get as flexible as possible in the shortest time. I arranged to meet her and congratulate on the joy the replacement knee was bringing her, it was then she broke down and hid her face in her hands to help deal with the pain this knee was causing her.

The hopital re-admitted her and began to try and identify the reason as to what the cause of the knees failure. Eventually it was tracked down to sepses and dealt with it before it caused anymore damage. Now was sepsis in the theatre or the surgical instruments. My guess is that a contaminted instrument with residual protein was not sterile due to the common misunderstanding of stainless steel being made sterile in the autoclave process. It may come out looking clean but it can still carry residual protein to cause the next patient they are used on to become another sepsis casualty.

Ironicly my friend is in the purchasing department of this hospital and now back to her old self after the problem of the knee was solved.
