The Neuroscience of Slaying Your Inner Critic

Have you ever had a habit that was hard to break out of? My hand is way up indicating – YES!!!

Most of us have. The reason for this is because our brains are very much like computers. It runs on a program – like a computer. Do you notice when you do something for the first time, it likely requires a lot of concentration. As you do it over and over (practice) you become better at it right? When you first input a topic in the search engine of a computer, it takes a minute for it to compute. When you search again a different time – it goes there faster right? OK, so when we do things for the first time, one neuron talks to another. Once we do this activity over and over, the pathway is solidified and then we’ve got a habit.

This is the simplified version of how habits form. But why am I telling you this?

The reason I share this is because too often people beat themselves up for thinking and behaving in ways that are not uplifting. I have met with so many clients who have a lot of self-doubt and low self-confidence. This way of thinking and of being – it’s a habit!

How do you break a habit? Will power? Accountability? Awareness? Yes, yes and YESSSSSS!!!! It’s all of it and more. Any one on it’s own though, will lower the odds of success. I have adopted the saying – when you fail to plan you plan to fail. If you want to increase your confidence, lower the impact of self-doubt and start thinking like the amazing, phenomenal human you are – then it’s time to plan.

You may experience disappointment at first. That’s ok. Fail forward. You have to get to know yourself and your tendencies so that you can make an effective plan for success.

Our team of skilled coaches and counselors has developed a comprehensive approach that examines multiple facets of your life. While the concept is straightforward, its implementation can be complex. That's where we come in. Leveraging our years of experience, we guide you through a transformative process designed to bring about meaningful change. This involves determining what is most important for you and then developing an effective plan for success.

Simple concept but the implementation runs deep… really enjoyed the article. Definitely reinforces the process of discovering the unconscious/conscious thoughts that ignites habits to be formed. Looking forward to more Jen ??
