Have you ever experienced that moment when certainty just disappears?
That moment when you realise you have been side lined by your blind spots?
That moment when you start seeing a different solution to a problem?
?
It happened to me yesterday.
I had to ask myself why?
How could I have missed my blind spot?
I felt euphoric that I had.
Because I realised from our episode 9 with Leanne Drew-McKain Episode 9 that having psychological social safety was not a cosy nice to have but a curtesy that allows for robust exploration and conversations that challenge and achieve new solutions to both existing and emerging changes.
?
Let’s face it we all prefer certainty in our lives as its driven by our brains need to confirm patterns, use existing connections, limit distress, and save energy. But many people thrive on curiosity and uncertainty whilst others default to a fixed mindset hence where psychosocial safety is such a pro-active framework, especially as we all know that the speed of change isn’t going to slow any time soon. This means continued readaptation, rethinking, and transforming whilst staying relevant.
?
So What?
A pro-active framework reduces conflict and promotes social relationships meaning diverse brains open to sharing, learning, and adapting to reach solutions.
A global study from Harvard Business Review and Canva found that 96% of companies agreed that ‘creative’ ideas are essential to an organisation’s long-term successes.
Easier said than done.
Mainly because most people don’t see themselves as creative so conflict can easily arise from feeling questioned. For many it is truly scary.
Also, for the brain it’s complex.
3 complex brain systems are involved – the Default, Salient and Executive networks. Also, the cerebellum for cognitive functions and the generation of new ideas. Within the limbic system the hippocampus that supports declarative and episodic memory. The parahippocampal gyrus that plays a role in memory encoding and retrieval. The Amygdala that is an important processing centre for emotions linking them to many other brain abilities including memory, learning and the senses.
?
How to
My own lived experience and studies have shown that the word ‘Creativity’ is polarising. One of the aims of our Brainy Podcasts; Talking Creativity and Innovation’ is to demystify it because let’s face it if you can decide what to wear each day or what to eat you are being creative.
It’s just for most of us enjoying being creative got pushed out of us at school and if you are only confident in drawing stick men then that’s you ruled out! Hello limiting beliefs!
Creativity is not just about the process of creating it is about the ability to see things from different perspectives allowing for exploration and making connections.
Hence a core part is letting go of preconceived ideas, questioning assumptions, and familiar solutions. Group think drowns creative think.
And for teams collaborating and being open comes with courage, honestly and trust (which uses additional brain areas). If people don’t feel connected by the social brain and feel a sense of belonging our brains cognition shuts down and vast amounts of energy are used by rumination.
?
If your curious to understand more then listen to Brainy Podcasts where we talk to guests from different walks of life. New episodes are being released over the next few months that include the impact of mental wellbeing, pre & post menopause, education and entrepreneurialism on the power and their influence on creating, innovating, ideation, and critical thinking everyday in business.

One Actionable Neuro-Hack
Stability kills learning.
When you brain enters a novel or surprising environment from the everyday predictability because of the newness it needs to work out what to make of the new environment or situation.
Are we safe? Have we been here before? What patterns does it fit with that we have?
It helps you brain refresh, disrupt habitual thinking and behaviour and release dopamine and adrenaline.
So as with the breathing hack above, try something new, maybe something you haven’t done since you were a child.
Novelty is a tonic for your brain health and joy!
NeuroMyths of the Month??????
Women perform better at maths tests. It’s just we are conditioned to believe that we aren’t and so start on a back foot. I know I’ve been there!
Be mindful of what collaborations you share with your friends, colleagues, or children.
Rethink what you’ve been told.
If it gets laid down and embedded it becomes a truth.
Sadly, a hollow disruptive mis-truth.
