Neurodiversity: The Untapped Superpower of the Workplace

The workplace is becoming increasingly diverse, and this includes the diversity of people's brains. Neurodiversity is the natural variation in human brains. Individuals who are neurodiverse often possess distinctive abilities and talents that can be significant assets in a professional setting.

What is neurodiversity?

A diversity of neurotypes characterizes the inherent differences in human brain functioning. It pertains to the various cognitive processes occurring within individuals' minds. Some individuals possess brains functioning conventionally, whereas others exhibit distinctive cognitive patterns. This diversity arises from a multitude of factors, encompassing genetics, surroundings, and life experiences.

What are the main types of neurodiversity?

  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
  • Tourette Syndrome
  • Dyspraxia
  • Dyslexia
  • Meares-Irlen Syndrome
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

Why is it worth promoting neurodiversity in the workplace?

Neurodiverse people often have unique strengths and talents that can be valuable assets in the workplace. And I'm not talking about "everyone is special" kind of assets. ??

Autisitcs are very good at pattern recognition and problem-solving. They are very accurate in their actions, focused on a task and will detect any error.

They excel in roles like:

  • Data Analyst,
  • Technical Writer,
  • Graphic Designer,
  • Research Scientist,
  • Software Developer.

People with ADHD are great with tasks involving giving ideas, multitasking, and creativity in general. They typically question conventional wisdom and challenge the status quo, fostering an environment of continuous improvement and innovation.

Employees with OCD are extremely accurate and precise in performing tasks. They have the ability to effectively organize tasks and projects, which is useful in project management or planning.

A study by the Korn Ferry Institute found that companies that made neurodiversity a focus of their DE&I (diversity, equity, and inclusion) efforts saw boosts in engagement, performance, and profits.
