Neurodiversity Affirming Practice: Empowering All Children in Occupational Therapy

At OTHC, we believe in celebrating all children's unique strengths and needs. This includes embracing neurodiversity in our occupational therapy (OT) practice.

What is Neurodiversity Affirming Practice?

Traditionally, OT has focused on addressing deficits. However, a neurodiversity-affirming approach shifts this focus. It acknowledges that variations in brain function and development are natural and not something to be "fixed." Instead, it emphasises understanding and supporting a child's individual strengths and challenges.

Why is it Important?

  • Empowerment: Children feel valued and understood, fostering self-confidence and a sense of belonging.
  • Improved Engagement: Therapy becomes more relevant and engaging when tailored to a child's unique learning style and sensory needs.
  • Holistic Support: The focus goes beyond just skill development, encompassing social-emotional well-being and overall participation in meaningful activities.
  • Collaboration: Parents and educators are seen as valuable partners in understanding the child's needs and creating a supportive environment.

How Can We Implement This?

Here are some key considerations for OTs:

  • Shifting Language: Focus on strengths and possibilities. Use person-first language (e.g., "child with autism" vs. "autistic child").
  • Strength-Based Approach: Set goals that build on a child's interests and motivations.
  • Sensory Awareness: Consider how sensory input (light, sound, touch) affects a child's participation in activities.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with parents and educators to create a consistent and affirming environment across all settings.

This is just the beginning of the conversation on neurodiversity-affirming practice in OT.

This article just scratches the surface! We recently explored this topic in depth on our podcast episode, Neurodiversity Affirming Occupational Therapy. The hosts, Mahek Bansal and Larissa Ferrari, discuss their experiences and share practical tips for implementing a neurodiversity-affirming approach in OT.

By embracing neurodiversity, we can empower all children to reach their full potential.
