Some interesting thoughts on Networking. I attend and have attended many events over the last few months and its interesting how some people approach it. My philosophy has always been I want to learn more about a person and their business so that I can refer business to them. Not whats in it for me.
A few of the people I have met seem hell bent on expecting referrals to come to them without putting in the leg work. You have to work at it and not expect anything in return in my opinion. Its a long term view and certainly not a short term view.
I promote members of my networking group both verbally, electronically and on Social Media. I am always looking for opportunities whereby I can hopefully add value to someone looking for a specific introduction. For people that I know outside of my Networking Group I am also happy to help promote and recommend where I feel I know them well enough based on experience.
Introductions don't always have to be a Referral infact sometimes just an introduction to a person or company with some useful synergies may lead to work in the future.
For me also, you should never turn down an opportunity to meet someone new you never know where it may lead.
Just my two penneth but something I feel strongly about.
Have a great day

8 年I fully agree Darren Metcalfe you never know what can come from meeting someone new. A lot of times it is even an associate or contact of the person you originally met, that might end up being the one that sparks something great! Always nice to see people trying to help others in business as it should always come back to you in some form. Cheers Stephen.

8 年Good article Darren Metcalfe and quite agree. It usually takes a good couple of meetings to earn the trust of a new contact and both parties need to put in the leg work. Very often if you introduce someone to your connections, they will remember you and aim to return the favour in the short to medium term. As soon as it becomes a "referral" and money is introduced, the whole relationship is biased and both parties will then be deemed not to be looking in client best interests. Keep it simple!
This system is rebooting. We thank you for your patience.
8 年We like this! See you on Friday and... I'll keep an eye out (and an ear to ground) for any opportunities for you in between...
