Networking to win
To network like a pro takes time, and lots of practice. Networking can be the best strategy and core for your job search if done correctly. It’s about nurturing a two-way relationship and contributing to the relationships you build.
Networking should not be treated as if you are making a sales pitch but building an intimate relationship and earning the chance to establish your credibility (who you are and what you do well). You cannot expect results networking without giving something back. So seek to make the investment in each relationship by having genuine and authentic interactions.
Also, it’s not about meeting as many people as possible, but how many relationships that will be built from each time you have the opportunity to connect with someone. This is not a race but a marathon and success will come from how we finish. But we must finish in order to win!
Networking tip of the day:
Within 24 hours from meeting your new contact(s) you to need to reach out without making any initial ask – just connect and relate. Then try to continue the conversation days, weeks and months later to learn more about your new found relationship and what you can offer each other.
Build the relationship and give before you ask. So before you try to cash in (ask for a job or referral) at your next networking event, remember to build the relationship first before you make a withdrawal from your social currency?
