Networking Tips for Introverted Administrative Assistants.

Welcome to my networking tips tailored specifically for introverted administrative assistants.

As an introverted administrative professional myself, I understand the challenges that come with navigating or even trying out networking events and building connections in a world that often celebrates extroverted qualities.

Q: “Erm…how is Jodie an introvert? She is confident and speaks up in front of others…”

A: “I never used to speak up at all, I found my professional voice only a few years ago, also found my confidence and let go of my insecurities once a few things clicked into place and it was all down to me- initiating the change I wanted”.

By definition "Introverted individuals typically recharge by spending time alone, preferring quieter and more reflective environments".

While introversion is often misunderstood as shyness, we should recognize that introverts bring strengths to the table as well, such as deep listening skills, thoughtfulness, and a desire for meaningful connections. However, networking can still feel daunting for introverted administrative assistants, especially in environments where extroversion seems to be the norm.

That's why I'm excited to share with you some of my effective strategies and tips to help us introverted administrative professionals thrive in networking situations and leverage your unique strengths to build meaningful professional relationships.

  • When you're at a networking event, focus on quality over quantity. It's okay to have a few meaningful conversations rather than trying to talk to everyone in the room. Set a goal to connect deeply with just a couple of people and follow up with them after the event to continue conversations.
  • If you're feeling shy or nervous, remember that most people at these events are probably feeling the same way. Take a deep breath and smile. You'll be surprised how quickly the conversation flows once you get started.
  • Seek out smaller, more intimate networking opportunities where you can have one-on-one conversations rather than large, crowded events. These settings are often more conducive to meaningful connections for introverts.
  • Practice active listening. Introverts are often great listeners, so use that to your advantage. Ask open-ended questions and show genuine interest in the other person's responses. This not only helps you build rapport but also takes some of the pressure off you to talk.
  • Building connections as an introverted administrative professional is not as hard as you may think. Don't be afraid to share your strengths as an introvert. Many people appreciate a good listener and someone who thinks before they speak. Your unique perspective can be really valuable in networking conversations.
  • Remember to recharge. Networking events can be draining for introverts, so be sure to schedule some downtime for yourself before and after the event. Find a quiet corner to take a breather if you need to, and don't feel guilty about it.
  • Lastly, give yourself credit for putting yourself out there! It takes courage to step outside your comfort zone, and even if you don't make a ton of connections at every event, every interaction is a learning experience.

  • It's not about being the life of the party, handing out business cards or being the outspoken one with the most intelligent thing to say, it's about making meaningful connections that can help advance your career, or help you with your day-to-day tasks – like meeting new suppliers and venues!

So there you have it, fellow introverted administrative assistants, you have learned that I am Iinfact an introvert as well and with a little bit of preparation and a willingness to step out of your comfort zone, you can do this and make use of networking events like a pro.
