The ULTIMATE 6 Top Tips for Successful Networking: Inspired by My Mum’s FOMO

The one thing I often moan about, but in reality is the true reason for our success, is my mum’s FOMO (Fear of Missing Out). We’ve cancelled flights, changed plans, and even hopped on last-minute flights (Literally going to the airport and catching the first available flight on the spot) just to make it to networking events. And you know what? It's really been worth it!

Networking is essential for success. You’ve probably heard the saying, “Your network is your net worth,” and it’s spot on.

But i am a total homebody and someone who’s pretty introverted, I find networking challenging. I can feel overwhelmed at large events, and the thought of striking up conversations can be daunting. But without putting myself in uncomfortable situations and turning up to these networking events, I wouldn’t be where I am today. In August 2024, I secured ($60k) from an investor for my business (LOSD) at a networking event that cost $5,000/ per ticket ($10k in total for me and mum) to attend. While the initial upfront investment was a hefty price for one event. But from my experience the better (and often pricier) the events, will have the higher the quality of connections.

The ULTIMATE 6 Top Tips

(1) Prepare Ahead of Time

Preparation is key when it comes to networking. Before attending an event, research the attendees and speakers. Check out their LinkedIn profiles or websites to get a sense of who they are and what they do. This knowledge will give you conversation starters and help you identify who you’d like to connect with. It’s easier to approach someone when you have a genuine question or topic in mind.

(2) Practice Your Pitch

Having a short personal pitch ready can also ease your nerves. This doesn’t have to be a formal introduction; just a few sentences about who you are, what you do, and what you’re looking for. This will help you make a strong first impression. Don’t forget to practice it out loud a few times so it feels natural!

(3) Use Your Smile

Here’s a simple yet effective tip: your smile is your best tool. It’s free and opens doors. A warm smile can make you approachable and inviting. People are more likely to engage with you when you seem friendly and open. Remember, networking is about building relationships, and a smile can go a long way in creating that connection.

(4) Set Networking Goals

Before you attend an event, set specific networking goals. Decide how many people you want to connect with or what types of connections you hope to make. This will give you a sense of purpose and help you stay focused during the event. Celebrate small wins, like exchanging business cards or having meaningful conversations.

(5) Follow Up

I admitted don't do this well enough and i need to do this more but i encourage everyone to follow up with the people you connected with. Send a quick email or LinkedIn message to thank them for their time and reference something specific from your conversation. This will help solidify your connection and keep the lines of communication open.

(6) Seek Support

For all my fellow introverts buddies who find networking scary, I understand how you feel. But don’t worry! At The London Organisation of Skills Development (LOSD) we host regular workshops & networking events, and skill-building sessions designed to help you practice your networking skills. Open to all whether you’re just starting out or already experienced.

Conclusion

So in summary, next time you think about skipping an event, channel that FOMO. The best opportunities are waiting for you outside your comfort zone. Embrace the discomfort, and see how far it can take you!

Fantastic piece Nurbanu, my biggest takeaway from this is that preparation is crucial for effective networking. And you are right...by researching attendees and speakers beforehand, you can gather details that can be conversation starters, making it easier to connect. Well done!
