A Networking Story for the ages...

A Story I always remember…
Some years back when I first moved to the area where I now live, I bought a secondhand car. It broke down one day and I managed to get it to a mechanic. Because it was not far from my house and as our city has its own bus service, I caught the bus to get home.
I struck up a conversation with the fellow sitting next to me and at one point he asked me what I did for a living. I began to tell him but I had to end because we were at my home stop. He told me he was getting out at that stop as well because he himself lived in the neighborhood. And because he was very interested in what I was doing he invited me to his house so I could tell him more.
When we got to his house, I pulled out my flip chart and got busy. A few minutes later his wife arrived. She came in, sat right across from us, and didn’t show much interest in us outside of just staring at us. I couldn't figure out her attitude. I completed my presentation. The fellow was happy and excited and he asked me to come on back on Tuesday night so we could fill out the paperwork. We happily parted. Naturally, I followed up and went back on Tuesday night. As I was getting close to the apartment I could hear some footsteps in the house. But after I knocked, all of a sudden there were no more footsteps of any kind whatsoever. A complete silence. I knocked again. Still nothing. I waited a few minutes, but I heard nothing from my prospect. I was puzzled because he had been genuinely interested. I went home scratching my head.
A few months later, the car broke down again. So I got on the bus again and took a seat. Sitting way up front was my prospect's wife. She called me over and I went to say hello. She told me that she wanted to apologize to me for not opening the door that evening when I returned to talk with her and her husband. She added that she thought I was a drug pusher coming in to sell drugs to her husband and that my flip-chart presentation was just a camouflage. After sincerely apologizing, she told me that the service I was providing could help her as she herself had some issues and she invited me back to do a complete presentation for her.
I always complied with such requests. I went back and did a full presentation to her. She loved it and signed up. Then she told me: “One knows, lots of people in my church could use this service. Why don't you come to my church next Sunday and I’ll introduce you to some people?” I was more than happy to. So, I went to meet her at her church.
One person to whom she introduced me looked at my card and said: “You know we have a Men's Ministry here. You should touch base with them and introduce your service to them.” He gave me a contact name.
Always compliant, I talked with that person and I was invited to the next meeting of the Men’s Ministry. That day, the man doing the presentation was an executive of one of the most successful companies around. After the presentation, I introduced myself and told him what I do. He got interested and gave me an appointment to meet with him in his office. I went and presented my company’s service to him. He called up a junior executive and asked him to work with me to implement the service in the company, which operated in 22 states.
That is how I inked my biggest contract to date: by networking.
Woven in this story, are the cardinal rules of networking. This story took place some 20 years ago. We have come a long way now. We have codified Networking. We have now made Networking Easier than Driving! Meaning, we can now teach anyone -repeat- anyone how to network as easily as they drive their cars and:
