Networking: A Skill That Can Be Acquired

Networking: A Skill That Can Be Acquired

I recently wrote about networking being an art or skill (Link here).

I have started writing on this amazing area as a lot of my friends, colleagues and well-wishers have been reaching out to me asking how I do it. I used to think its just about how I choose to spend time, but when I dig deeper, I realize its actually a very simple "model". Its not a cast-in-stone structure so please feel free to add.

While some are blessed to be naturally outgoing and "out there", interestingly it doesn't translate into "networking" which is not just an inherent talent / art ; it is a skill that all of us can develop and master with practice and dedication. Needless to say, establishing a robust network is essential in today's competitive market, providing access to valuable opportunities, collaborations, and personal advancement.

Here are key points to consider when acquiring networking skills which I have seen during the course of my corporate journey and I am a big believer of point#7

  1. Take initiative: Proactively seek out networking opportunities. Attend industry events, join professional associations, and participate in online communities relevant to your field of interest.
  2. Start small: Begin by networking with fellow graduates, professors, alumni, and friends. Cultivate relationships within your immediate circle to gain confidence and refine your networking abilities.
  3. Craft an elevator pitch: Create a concise and compelling introduction that highlights your skills, passions, and career goals. Practice delivering it confidently to make a memorable impression on potential connections.
  4. Active listening: Networking involves building mutually beneficial relationships. Practice active listening, showing genuine interest in others, and asking thoughtful questions to foster meaningful connections.
  5. Leverage online presence: Utilize social media platforms and professional networking sites like LinkedIn to showcase your skills, connect with industry professionals, and stay updated on industry trends.
  6. Follow up: After meeting someone, send a personalized follow-up message or email expressing your gratitude for the conversation. Stay connected by periodically sharing relevant updates or articles.
  7. Give before receiving: Offer assistance, advice, or resources to others in your network without expecting an immediate return. Generosity and a willingness to contribute will strengthen relationships and build goodwill.
  8. Seek mentors and role models: Identify experienced professionals who can guide and inspire you. Building relationships with mentors can provide valuable insights, advice, and career opportunities.
  9. Embrace discomfort: Networking often requires stepping outside your comfort zone. Attend events, engage with unfamiliar people, and participate in activities that challenge you. These moments can lead to new connections and opportunities.
  10. Practice consistently: Networking is a skill that improves with practice. Actively seek out networking opportunities, refine your communication skills, and learn from each interaction to expand and enhance your network.

Remember, networking is a valuable skill that can greatly impact your journey - both personally and professionally. By investing time, effort, and adopting a proactive mindset, you can acquire and excel in the art of networking, opening doors to professional success and personal growth.
