Networking the right way

A year ago I met a sales & marketing guru with a huge social media following.

He mentored me for the next 6 months.

He taught me invaluable lessons.

He also introduced me to lots of future clients.

He never asked for anything in exchange.

Why?

Because he likes me.

(Surprising him by speaking to him in his native language in our first interaction has probably a lot to do with it.)

Yesterday I talked to my Brazilian Jiu Jitsu coach.

Hadn't talked to him in months, because I'm injured and I can't train.

I sent him a voice message in Portuguese.

Asking about private lessons working around my injuries.

He responded with a couple of long voice messages.

Really happy about me speaking to him in his native language instead of Spanish.

Excited about the idea of teaching BJJ in Portuguese & English.

(I offered to help him improve his English while he coaches me)

He then sent me the contact details of a friend who also needs to learn English for business.

He just made me more money than what the private jiu-jitsu classes are going to cost me.

These are not isolated incidents.

This happens all the time if you're doing things the right way.

It's not that complicated:

  1. Learn useful skills that solve people's problems
  2. Meet people in a geniune, non-transactional way
  3. Be likable

If people know you're great at solving a specific problem.

They'll immediately think of you whenever anyone mentions having that problem.

"I know someone that can help you" is the best marketing you can get.

Be helpful and be likable.

And good things will keep coming your way.

That's how you play life on easy mode.
