Networking Playbook For the Introverts

Networking Playbook For the Introverts

We are navigating a world where visibility is key to success! And in a post-pandemic world, being strategic with your visibility is more important than ever.

In-person networking is extremely high-energy. For a social butterfly like myself, I thrive in situations like these. I am a connector and once you put me in a space with a lot of buzz, there I go.

The pandemic made me more introverted. It made me more aware of my energy, and more strategic with how I choose to network and where I spend my time. For those who identify as introverts, networking can be daunting. The good news is that networking doesn't have to feel like an insurmountable challenge. With the right approach and mindset, we can leverage networking opportunities to amplify our voices, build meaningful connections, and advance our businesses.

I'm sharing my playbook for introverts so you can network like a pro!

Do Your Research

Most networking events and conferences will use an app or an event tool that will share who is attending. One way to alleviate the anxiety of networking is by doing your homework beforehand. Research the other attendees or speakers who will be present at the event. Familiarize yourself with their content backgrounds, interests, and accomplishments. This not only helps you feel more prepared but also provides valuable conversation fodder once you're mingling.

Set Clear Objectives

Before attending any networking event, it's crucial to set clear objectives for what you hope to achieve. Whether it's making a certain number of connections, finding potential collaborators, or simply practicing your communication skills, having a goal in mind can give your networking efforts direction and purpose. Example: I know the Vice President of Communications of X company will be at this event. I can not leave this event until I go up shake this person's hand and introduce myself to this person

Hype Song or Grounding Technique

When we are about to get into high-energy settings we need to put ourselves in that mindset. This is where a hype song or a grounding technique comes into play. Put on music during your commute that gets you feeling confident. My go-to hype song is Daddy Yankee's "GASOLINA" ... duh! If hype songs aren't your thing and you prefer more grounding exercises, right before you get out of your car, take some time to do a brief breathing exercise or affirmation reciting. Grounding yourself is a great way to feel relaxed and calm your nerves.

Stand out with your fashion

Wearing your brand colors or something that represents you and your brand, your location or heritage is a great way to stand out and conversation starter. For example, anytime I travel to an out-of-state conference, I always wear something that screams "San Antonio or South Texas." This gets folks to ask "where did you get that?" I then start talking about San Antonio and the work I do as a social media & business coach and conference organizer.

Follow-Up and Support

Networking doesn't end when the event is over. Follow up with the people you connected with to nurture those relationships. Send a personalized email or LinkedIn message expressing your appreciation for the conversation and suggesting ways to stay in touch. Additionally, look for opportunities to support your new connections, whether it's through referrals, collaborations, or simply cheering them on from the sidelines.
