Learn to Become a True Networker
Do you remember the first time you attempted something before anyone taught you how? If your experience was anything like mine, like the first time I held a basketball and took a shot, then you likely failed spectacularly. Though this isn’t the place for that story, the lesson I learned still applies.
Many business professionals who try networking for the first time without guidance can relate. Too often, people rely on the saying, “Practice makes perfect,” but practicing the wrong things only makes you perfect at being bad.
The best networkers I’ve encountered share a common trait: they are lifelong learners. They also follow three essential practices that consistently set them apart.
1. The Best Networkers READ
Exceptional networkers are readers who continuously hone their skills by exploring the insights of thought leaders. Here are some recommended readings for key networking skills:
??Communication: Everyone Communicates, Few Connect by John C. Maxwell
?? Influence: How to Win Friend & Influence People by Dale Carnegie
?? Providing Value: The Go-Giver by Bob Burg & John David Mann
?? Sales: The Sales Messenger by Mary Anne Davis
?? Collaboration: The Seven Levels of Communication by Michael J Maher
?? Trust: The Speed of Trust by Stephen M. R. Covey
2. The Best Networkers EXPLORE?
Curiosity is the hallmark of an excellent networker. They are genuinely curious about people and are intentional about meeting new contacts, learning from them, and providing value.

The best networkers are:
??? Curious: They seek to understand the people they meet, learn from them, and find ways to serve them.
???♀? Goal-Setters: They define their networking goals, like the number and types of events they’ll attend and the specific people they aim to meet.
??? Planners: They prepare for each event, learning about the agenda, who will be there, and who they intend to connect with.
???♀? Communicators: They view the initial meeting as just the beginning, planning follow-ups to deepen relationships and provide ongoing value.
?3. The Best Networkers INQUIRE
The most successful networkers know the power of asking insightful questions. Questions open pathways to deeper connections and understanding. Here are some key questions to ask when meeting someone new:
?? What brought them to the event? This helps you understand their purpose and relationship-building goals.
?? What do they do professionally that aligns with the event’s focus? This reveals their strategy and interests.
?? Personal background: Asking where they’re from, what led them to their current location, and a bit about their family can uncover shared values.
?? Hobbies and passions: Understanding what they do outside of work provides insight into their personal growth and interests.
As you prepare for networking opportunities (Remember, “When the opportunity comes, it’s too late to prepare” ~ John Wooden), position yourself to learn from, share insights with, and connect your new contacts, with others.
One thing I’ve learned through networking is this: the more I learn, the more I realize how much I don’t know. Building relationships with others fuels my journey as a lifelong learner and brings enriching connections along the way.
Now, what step will you take today to become a better networker?
