Networking My Way to the Future: A Growth-Filled Semester

Networking My Way to the Future: A Growth-Filled Semester

It feels like I just got to Canada, excited and a bit nervous about what lay ahead. Now, here we are – on the cusp of completing the course! I'm amazed at how quickly time has passed. I remember those early days of meeting my classmates and feeling unsure, but now I've learned so much and had so many new experiences. One of the highlights of this semester was the Digital Marketing Seminar series hosted by Wendy Greenwood , where I had the opportunity to gain invaluable insights from industry professionals and experts.?

Throughout the seminar series, I have had the privilege of learning from a variety of speakers, each with their own unique experiences and insights to share. However, one speaker, in particular, stood out to me was Sam Leung . His session on the role of AI in marketing completely changed my perspective on this rapidly evolving technology.

Before attending Sam's session, like many others, I viewed AI as a potential threat to job security and human creativity. However, Sam's insights helped me understand that AI is not meant to replace humans, but rather to assist us. He emphasized the importance of viewing AI as a tool, rather than a threat, and highlighted its potential to enhance our creativity and work more efficiently. This realization has broadened my career options, showing me that AI can complement human skills rather than replace them.

Sam's session taught me the importance of keeping an open mind and embracing new technologies. Networking played a crucial role in this learning process and it's also the most important lesson I learned from the seminar series. By connecting with industry professionals, I was able to gain insights and perspectives that have reshaped my career outlook. Networking isn't just about exchanging business cards or LinkedIn connections – it's about building meaningful relationships that can propel your career forward.?

My Networking Journey

Networking—a term that once intimidated me, a concept I struggled to grasp. Yet, here I am, reflecting on my journey of stepping out of my comfort zone and diving headfirst into the world of networking.

It all began with a single step, a decision to attend a networking event hosted by IABC. I was nervous, unsure of what to expect, but thanks to Srijoni Sarkar , I found myself surrounded by industry professionals and like-minded individuals. It was a moment of revelation—a realization that networking wasn't just about exchanging business cards, but about forming meaningful connections.

That first event was a game-changer. It taught me the value of stepping out of my comfort zone, of embracing discomfort as a path to growth. After my first networking event, I started getting comfortable in being uncomfortable and that really helped me expand my network not only through in-person networking events but also through LinkedIn.

This not only allowed me to hear from industry professionals, but I also engaged in meaningful conversations with them, gaining first-hand insights into potential career pathways. Additionally, I forged connections with like-minded individuals who share my passion for marketing, providing mutual support as we navigate the job market together.

I also tapped into my network at GBC. We created a group chat where we share job postings, help each other find summer co-op opportunities and swap study resources. It's a collaborative effort – where everyone contributes and benefits. This has been especially helpful as a few members have already landed co-ops and continue to support others in their search. It shows the strength of our network within the group.

I will continue to be in contact with my network and continue nurturing these valuable connections, I plan to stay active on LinkedIn, where I've connected with many professionals and peers. I'll engage with their posts, share relevant content, and reach out with personalized messages to keep the lines of communication open.

When it came to finding job opportunities, I explored various resources to increase my chances of success. One of the most useful resources was the GBC careers page, where I found several relevant job postings. I also utilized online job search engines like Indeed and Glassdoor, as well as professional networking sites like LinkedIn.

Thanks to all these lessons, I am happy to say that I have been offered a marketing position at Sunwing. Networking played a significant role in securing this position. Through LinkedIn, I was able to connect with professionals in the industry, including some at Sunwing. These connections helped me learn more about the company, its culture, and its opportunities.

Here are some networking tips and best practices that helped me in my journey:

  • Be genuine: Authenticity is key; be yourself and show sincere interest in others.
  • Exude confidence: Confidence showcases your abilities and makes a positive impression.
  • Step out of your comfort zone: Growth happens when you push yourself beyond familiar boundaries.
  • Follow up: Stay connected and show appreciation; it strengthens relationships and opens doors to new opportunities.

Navigating the world of networking can be daunting, but with the right mindset and approach, it can open doors to endless opportunities. So, take that first step, attend that event, and start building connections that will shape your future.
