Networking Made Simple: My Journey and How You Can Start Today

Networking is a buzzword in almost every career, whether you're job searching, climbing the corporate ladder, or building your own business. The truth is, I wasn’t always great at it. But over time, it’s become second nature—and something I now see as essential, not only for my own career but for the success of my clients too.

For me, it all started with a nonprofit. I began working with Weitblick, which introduced me to the concept of networking as a tool for connecting people with common goals. From there, I continued expanding my network while working for Professor Meffert, building up a social-medical startup and realizing how much of a difference networking can make especially with very influential people. When I transitioned into coaching, it became even more clear: My network is the base of my success.

Today, as a self-employed coach, networking has become a way of being. It's something I do naturally, but it wasn’t always like that.?

What Makes a Good Networker in the New World of Work?

The first handshake dates to 5th century B.C. Greece. Networking was prevalent since then, what's stopping you now?

  1. Be Clear on Your Goals: Networking isn’t just about collecting business cards. It’s about knowing what you want and seeking out connections that can help you achieve those goals. But it’s also about being willing to help others achieve theirs. The best networking relationships are mutually beneficial.
  2. Help Others First: Approach networking with the mindset of service. Find out what the other person needs, and see how you can help them. It could be as simple as an introduction or sharing some advice.
  3. Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help: It’s okay to ask for help! Whether it’s advice, a referral, or just a second opinion, good networking is about giving and receiving. It builds stronger, more meaningful connections.

Ready to Become a Great Networker?

Whether you're just starting out or looking to improve your skills, networking is a tool that can unlock new opportunities in your career. And the best part? It’s never too late to start. Just show up with a willingness to connect, help others, and be helped in return.
