Networking: The Key to Success

Throughout my career, I have always acknowledged the importance of networking, the power of my network and how investing in building relationships can all help us. With this, I would love to share what has worked and what I have learned along the way.

So let's start with the common question many people ask me - "So Dom - how do I get started?". Let's start with the basics. In order to build a network, we need to take action and start networking.

When identifying networking events to attend, I have always looked for events based on interests, purpose or meeting new people to expand my professional or personal network. I have always found value in joining Chamber of Commerce (a local business association) events. When I attended my first Australian Chamber of Commerce networking event, the purpose was to feel a sense of community in Singapore. I quickly learned that meeting professionals alike helped me build relationships on a deeper level due to the simple commonality of nationality.

Next is, focus on what value you bring to a networking event. Is it subject matter expertise? Is it your own network? Your wealth of knowledge in a particular industry? Knowing your point of difference or your own unique selling point(s) will bring depth to the conversations you are having. What is clear is that there is so much more to networking than "small talk". Asking thought provoking questions such as; what brought you to this event? what countries have you lived and traveled to? what line of work or industry are you in? creates an opportunity for continuous learning and building rapport.

Lastly, determine the best way to remain connected with the people in whom you meet, it might be through LinkedIn or email. A reminder when connecting via these platforms is to always mention where you met to ensure they remember you. Continue to build on that relationship, through sharing an upcoming event, an interesting article or introducing someone within your own network. Remember networking is always two ways.

So going back to the beginning of my story and the power of my network. How I secured the current role I am in today was through someone in my network. In reconnecting with this person and sharing my interest in a client facing, project management role, I was introduced to the right people in the organization and was successful in securing the role I am in today.

In conclusion, stay connected with people who inspire and whom you can learn from, be intentional when building relationships and stay curious - as you never know where one conversation may lead you to.

I can attest to your zeal for networking, and these are such valuable insights, Domenique! 100% with you on the importance of showing up, going beyond the small talk, and building genuine relationships. When I was at the St. Gallen Symposium, we all had our names and organisations on our tags but not our positions, which facilitated really interesting conversations - you could be speaking with a CEO and only find out mid-conversation when you ask "so what are you doing at xx company" ?? But that also helped create an environment where people got to know each other for who they were, rather than their position in the organisation. That's also what inspired Bryan Michael Chiew 赵森 and I to start The ASEAN Network, where we intentionally bring good, passionate, impact-driven, folks together, to build a strong intertwined network and community in the region. A valuable summary Domenique Onishi, I'd also add don't network with the attitude of getting something or meeting only "useful" people - as you said, know what value you bring to a conversation and what common ground you may be able to find. The conversations you have may be surprisingly enjoyableor insightful, regardless of whether the connection continues beyond that event, as not all will.
