As technology takes the spotlight, this journey harks back to India's initial steps into healthcare digitization through the implementation of Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) systems during the latter part of the 20th century. These early strides signified the initial movement toward establishing a connected and integrated healthcare ecosystem. This evolution led to terms like Automated Health Records (AHR), Computer-based Patient Record (CPR), Electronic Medical Record (EMR), and Electronic Health Record (EHR). AHR automated health record functions beyond clinical aspects, while CPR utilized computers for patient data management. EMR stored medical history within institutions, and EHR expanded to encompass multiple providers and locations. Although EHRs replaced paper records, lack of standardization hindered data exchange. Recognizing networking and Health Information Exchange (HIE)'s potential, the Indian government introduced initiatives like the National Health Portal and the National Digital Health Mission (NDHM).
