Networking, as a concept, has long been rooted in the fundamental human need to connect and form relationships. Networking, or intentionally cultivating and leveraging personal and professional connections, became increasingly recognised as a valuable skill for career advancement and business success. The rise of professional associations, industry events, and business communities provided platforms for individuals to network and expand their circles. Needless to say that those circles were curated and nurtured by those who hold the power, mainly men.

However, the traditional understanding of networking has evolved, and it's time we embrace its new meaning.

The world has undergone significant changes, driven by technological advancements and societal dynamics shifts. The internet and social media have brought us closer together, yet they can also create isolation within our own bubbles. In-person meetings have been replaced by virtual interactions, altering the way we connect. We've witnessed a rise in diverse leadership roles across industries, with women taking up prominent positions. Moreover, the global pandemic has fundamentally reshaped our connections and interactions.

These changes have given rise to new needs for connection and collaboration. People seek networks that transcend traditional boundaries and go beyond personal and professional advancement. They are yearning to come together for a common objective, to create synergies, and advocate for what truly matters.

This new concept of networking is characterised by inclusivity and openness. It goes beyond limited circles and embraces engagement with societal groups, organizations, and communities. It is no longer just about personal gain; it's about working together for the greater good.

The beauty of this new networking approach lies in its bottom-up nature. It empowers different groups within society to initiate change and make their voices heard. It challenges the traditional hierarchical structure of advocacy, expanding the scope of influence from global to local. It is a testament to the power of collaboration and the collective will to shape a better future.

Networking today is about creating new alliances, engaging in meaningful dialogues, and sharing knowledge and best practices. It is about tapping into collective intelligence and expertise to drive innovative solutions. By fostering a culture of collaboration and empowerment, we can achieve positive change that transcends individual interests. We can create networks that transcend traditional boundaries and help us achieve our advocacy goals - going from global to local.

I encourage each and every one of you to embrace this new concept of networking. Let us grow our networks not only to advance ourselves but also to make a difference in the world. Together, we can build the future we envision—one that is inclusive, equitable, and impactful.
