On a regular basis I chat with job seekers and ask them how the process is going for them and more often than not, their answers are not very positive. I hear how they are spending time and energy on the Internet “researching” and sending out applications with little to no positive responses. Some acknowledge networking, but say it really isn’t producing the results they are looking for. A JOB.

It has been my experience that while there are no absolutes to the process of finding or creating a new and rewarding employment opportunity, we can learn from the experiences of others, putting into practice what has proved to be effective and there is nothing that beats personal referrals and advocates, both of which come from networking.

80/85% of my clients are finding or creating new jobs in the manner and there is no other alternative that comes close.

To be an effective networker, you first need to be targeted or focused. In my opinion, this begins with taking your areas of interests, coupled with your transferable skills, the essence of who you are seriously and where you will have the energy and enthusiasm to do the research. Secondly, look to the people you know, share your daily life with, socialize and volunteer with. Those who share your interests and most importantly have a close enough connection so as to be willing to put their positive and creative thinking caps on for you. On balance, strangers won’t.

Networking is a time to have positive and thoughtful research conversations with people you know in a friendly sociable manner. It is also important to stay in touch with your network so as to remain memorable. One time doesn’t do it.

Please don’t become fooled thinking the networking quantity is more important than having a quality network. It is not about numbers in most cases. Remaining in the minds and hearts of your network is far more important than having many networking meeting without being memorable and therefore easily forgotten.

Lastly, effective networking is not unlike a courtship, with emotional connection and comfort far more important than raw unproductive numbers. Taking your gifts and interests seriously … the essence of who you are … surround yourself with your “pack” and good things will happen.
