Networking. Give first. Take later

Before I jump into this newsletter I wanted to thank all of you from the bottom of my heart. Last week, LinkedIn India announced it's 15 Top Voices for career success and coaching. Yours truly was one of the 15 and has only you to thank. Every minute you invested in reading my posts, liking, sharing, and commenting, all of it counts. And it helps.
You can read the announcement and know about the other coaches here. I strongly suggest you follow them on LinkedIn for some awesome content.
Effective?#networking. Give first. Seek later, if at all.
Networking is misunderstood. A lot. It is not something you do to get something out of it. The joy of networking is the process itself. It is like a bank where ?????? ?????? ?????????????? ?????????????????? ?????? ?? ???????? ????????????????????.
?????? ???? ?????? ??????????????? As always, understand your Why. If your Why is short-term, say looking for a job, then network accordingly. If you are looking to talk at conferences then look accordingly. What is your Why?
???????? ?????? ?????????? ??????, ???????????? ???????? ?????? ???????????????? ???? ???????????????????? ???????? ?????? ?????????? ????????????'?? ??????.
???????????????? ???? ??????????????: There are millions of LinkedIn users who will happily connect with you if your interest is in just increasing your connections. But why? How will it help? I understand, critical mass is important but you get critical mass with maybe 500 odd. So think before you send that connection request.
???????? ???????? ???????? ????????: Networking is more about giving than taking. Read that again.
Imagine this. How will you feel if within seconds of accepting a connection you get a message asking for a job or a sales pitch? No one is sitting with jobs in a basket or is obliged to hand them to you just because you connected with them on LinkedIn. Gulp that.

Book Summary: ???? ???????? ???????? ??????'?? ???????????? ?????? By Cal Newport
Here are three key points from the book:
1. Follow your?#passion?is often bad advice. Follow mastery instead
2.?#Career?capital is a pre-requisite to passion
3. Build career capital with deliberate practice
You can read the full review on LinkedIn as well.
?????? ?????????????? ????????????????????: We all know of stories of people who 'followed their passion' but life did not work out. The book is full of examples of people who were misguided by the allure of ‘passion’ and jumped on to a career shift that they were not ready for. And then they hit a wall.

Do we find love in work OR do we start loving what we are doing? This hits at the root of a lot of internet wisdom we get. It is fashionable to say – follow your passion and everything else will follow. Evidence does not support this.
Look around yourself. Talk to people who you think have done well in life. Not the celebrity type. Regular people.

We find passion in what we become good at. Not the other way around.
Follow your passion, does work in performing arts and sport. However, only passion won’t take you far. Hard work and skills are needed.
???????????? ?????????????? ?????? ??????????????: If passion is overrated, what really works? With stories of regular people selecting a career and excelling in it, Cal has presented the Mastery or Career Capital hypotheses.
What you love to do, you should be good at. Real good. Career capital are these rare and valuable skills you bring to the job you want to do. These may not be unique but are not abundant either.
Building and nurturing a craftsman’s mindset is critical to building career capital. Work on skills with the single-minded devotion of getting better.
???????????????????? ????????????????: They say, practice makes a man (or woman) perfect. A useful extension to this adage is – perfect practice makes a man perfect.
You might recall the 10,000 hour principle from Malcom Gladwell’s book Outliers here. You work diligently and with focus and you get better.

I loved the concept of the ???????????????? ????????????????. Many discoveries are only possible in an adjacent space of other discoveries. Only when you acquire amazing skills in an area you may realise that doors in seemingly unrelated areas will open.
???? ???? ???????? ???????? ???????? ??????’?? ???????????? ??????. ?????? ???? ???????? ????, ?????????? ?????????? ???????? ????????.
Book Summary 2: The Compund Effect by Darren Hardy
This summary I wrote has done rather well and has almost 11k views by now. You can read it here.
Thought of the week
Are we being what we want our kids to be?
Being a?#rolemodel?applies at home and work. It is inherently unfair to expect others, teams or children, to do what we are unwilling or unable to do.
LinkedIn Audio Events
I am a beta tester for LinkedIn's newest feature - Audio Events. As part of this I have participated in and conducted some test events. Works really well. Look forward to more such audio events.

3 年Thank you, Anshuman. A great insight into Tata's Quality journey. Suresh Sir's historic context was so important. It was interesting to listen to Devraj Chattaraj's quality experiences and his ongoing journey. As we make our transition into the post-pandemic world of work, we not only have to think of our external customers but we also need to pay attention to our internal customers (employees) needs and incorporate these into the TQM and Quality model, such as well-being, resilience building, and empowerment of people. Best wishes.
