The Networking Game!

I recently read a saying “Your network is your net worth” and it was like one of those moments when you hear something you acknowledge and are aware of deep down but still it always astonishes you.

Strength of the Weak Ties

A simple concept of Game Theory, called the strength of the weak ties states that people you are most connected to like your close friends, family and teammates are least likely to bring unique opportunities to your life. But people you are just acquainted with are the ones that open the doors to places you have never been to. Hence, networking becomes crucial to reach new lands.

But how does one network?

Rules of the Networking Game!

1. Meet People

Attend club meetings, events, and training that interests you or are concerned with what you want to get into. As someone said, “What people do in their free time determines how far they will go”. Over the years I have seen they are so many free or paid events happening, you just have to be on the lookout, here Google or any Social Media platform can help.

2. Leverage Social Media

When Attending a physical conference bring a small diary or use a phone to note the names of people you came across and who inspired you. On the same day send them personalized LinkedIn requests, engage with their content, and don't be shy about it. These are unknown people it doesn't matter if all of them accept or not, at least some definitely will.

3. First Impressions

While some people are great at holding a conversation and making an impression on the spot, all of us are not, and it's fine. Make sure to ping people over personal messages later maybe admiring or sharing your thoughts on a speech or the organization wherever it makes sense and where it is genuine.

4. Do your homework

Reach out when required but do your study before asking queries. Don’t go clueless and expect the person to take time out of their busy schedule to mentor you. It's better to have a specific question in mind, which the person can answer or help with. Once they respond, see where the conversation goes!

Now given we are aware of all the victories at stake and the rules involved. With the current pandemic why not work on our network and increase our net worth? Why not utilize the free time at hand to build ourselves? The world is our playground.
