In this month’s newsletter, we're focusing on one of the most challenging aspects of job searching: networking. My recent poll on LinkedIn revealed that 20% of respondents find networking the hardest part of job searching. But with the right strategies and mindset, networking can become a powerful tool to elevate your career, at all stages.
Benefits of Networking
In addition to supporting you on your job search there are many broader benefits of networking, it can:
?? Expand Your Horizons
Networking introduces you to new ideas, perspectives, and opportunities that you might not encounter otherwise. Engaging with a diverse group of professionals can inspire creativity and innovation in your own work.
?? Build a Support System
A strong network provides emotional support, advice, and mentorship. Whether you're facing a challenging project or contemplating a career change, having a network of trusted colleagues can make a significant difference.
?? Keep You Informed
Networking keeps you updated on industry trends, best practices, and emerging technologies, helping you stay ahead of the curve and maintain your competitive edge.
??Build Your Reputation
Consistent and meaningful networking helps build your personal brand. By sharing your expertise, offering support, and being an authentic connection, you establish yourself as a valuable and respected professional in your field.
?? Open Hidden Opportunities
Many job openings are never advertised. They are filled through referrals and recommendations within professional networks. By staying connected and active in the profession you increase your chances of hearing about these hidden opportunities.
Thinking Differently About Networking
So, there’s many reasons to build and nurture your network. It’s definitely more than attending events and collecting business cards. It's about building meaningful relationships that can support and enhance your career at every stage. If we think about networking as ‘just having conversations’ we can approach things from a different angle.
Here are some ways to think differently about networking:
1. Make Networking a Daily Practice
Networking doesn't have to be confined to formal events. Every interaction, whether it's a chat with a colleague or a social media comment, is an opportunity to network. By approaching everyday interactions with a networking mindset, you’ll naturally expand your network without added pressure.

2. Make Use of Informational Interviews
Informational interviews are a fantastic way to gather insights about your desired industry or role without the pressure of a job interview. Reach out to professionals in your field and ask if they can spare 20 minutes for an informal chat. Prepare thoughtful questions and use the opportunity to learn and make a memorable impression. I have clients who have seen job offers and recommendations for interview come from these interactions.
3. Volunteer and Participate in Community Activities
Volunteering can be another great way to expand your network and demonstrate your skills in a different context. Whether it's a professional association or a community based project, these activities allow you to meet new people and showcase your commitment and abilities.
4. Join Online Communities and Forums
Beyond LinkedIn, there are numerous online communities and forums specifically for HR and more recently dedicated forums for HR job seekers. Engaging in these spaces by contributing valuable content, answering questions, and participating in discussions can significantly broaden your network and potentially open up opportunities.
5. Create and Share Content
Your voice and opinions really do matter. People are genuinely interested in your story and what you have to contribute. Sharing your insights or even commenting on posts, can attract like-minded professionals and open up new networking opportunities.
6. Remember the Follow Up
When you follow up after meeting or talking to someone, offer something of value—be it an article, a book recommendation, or a useful connection. This helps reinforce the relationship and shows that you’re thinking about how you can contribute, not just what you can gain.
How about considering organising your own small networking gathering, either virtually or in person. Being a host can position you as a central figure in your professional community and can offer a ready made supportive community.? Our Ayrshire LinkedIn Local started that way and from 8 people has grown to over 100.? It’s a super supportive community where may collaborations and friendships have grown.
Your Network is Your Net Worth
Networking is a huge investment in your career. It opens doors to new opportunities, provides support and guidance, and helps you stay informed about industry trends. By building a diverse and supportive network, you really can navigate your career path with greater confidence and success.
Remember, every connection you make has the potential to open new doors and provide you with invaluable support along the way.
I hope these tips and insights will help you feel more confident building and nurturing your network.
