Networking is not a Dirty Word

When you hear the word “networking,” does your skin crawl? Does your mouth turn dry – or your stomach drop? For many people, networking is akin to torture, yet expanding your network is essential for growth and achieving your aspirations. So, how can we make it less painful?

  1. Practice Mental Agility.?Shifting your mindset and changing your daily habits can increase your networking tolerance. Try altering your commute route, sitting in a new workspace, or experimenting with your morning routine to make you more open to interacting with new people.
  2. Get Curious. Instead of focusing inward—exacerbating self-consciousness—shift your attention outward. Ask questions about?them. “Where did you grow up?” or “What’s the best concert you’ve been to?” should get them talking and create a connection. ?
  3. Start Small.? Begin your networking journey in smaller, more comfortable environments, or ask a friend to attend with you. Meeting people in relaxed settings can build confidence and pave the way for bigger networking opportunities. ?

Finally, build in recovery time. Last Spring, I spoke at the?Women in Finance event?and coached?Tableau Conference?speakers the same week! The interactions and conversations were fantastic, but it took me three solid days to recover from the stimulation.?Recovery time is essential. ?

What are your networking tips? I'd love to hear!
