Networking: Catalyst Or Buzzword?

Networking: Catalyst Or Buzzword?

In the dynamic world of healthcare, the role of the medical science liaison #MSL thrives on meaningful connections. But what exactly is #networking, and how can it empower MSLs to excel?

Networking is the art of building and nurturing mutually beneficial relationships. It's about creating a supportive network of colleagues, peers, and key stakeholders within the medical community (and beyond).

Think of it as cultivating fertile ground where knowledge, ideas, friendships, and collaborations can flourish...

For #MSLs, networking isn't just about building rapport. It's about gaining valuable insights, staying abreast of industry trends, and uncovering hidden opportunities to effectively (and compliantly) represent their companies and support scientific advancements.

By fostering strong relationships with healthcare professionals #HCPs, researchers, academicians, and other MSLs (and non-MSLs, cross-functional colleagues within and beyond their companies), MSLs can create a powerful support system - an essential building block for career success.

So, how do you get started?

  • Seek out relevant industry events, online communities, and conferences.
  • Participate in discussions, share your expertise, and actively connect with individuals who share your interests (directly or tangentially).
  • Volunteer with a local organization, including organizations outside of healthcare.

Always remember, #networking is a two-way street. Be an active listener, offer your help, and build genuine connections that go beyond superficial interactions and immediate benefits to you.

By harnessing the power of #networking, MSLs can become true #connectors, #influencers, and #advocates within the medical community and beyond. So, step outside your comfort zone, start building your network, and watch your professional journey soar!

“Build genuine connections that go beyond …immediate benefit to you” - I love this reminder to always strengthen our networks, especially when we don’t need them for an emergency job change! It’s much more efficient (and fun) to build these connections in a systematic manner at a sustainable pace!

"Be an active listener." I believe this component of networking is so often overlooked. Unfortunately, when some people go to "network" it is only about themselves. However, you get the most out of these interactions when you enter with the "how can we help each other" mindset. Thank you for sharing George Limen, PharmD, ACCA
