Networking for Career Success

Networking for Career Success

?? Networking is essential to career progression! In today's world, online interactions often dominate, but the value of meeting individuals face-to-face is irreplaceable. And the Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo (FNCE) is the biggest in-person networking event of the year for our profession. For registered dietitians, dietetic technicians, students and interns, FNCE serves as an opportunity to engage with peers, exhibitors, schools, thought leaders, and potential employers. This year’s event, held in Minneapolis, expected 10,000 attendees, each bringing their unique experiences and expertise to the table. What is it about FNCE that draws such a great crowd? I recently met with a few of Sodexo’s recruiters who attended FNCE to learn about their takeaways.

In a nutshell,?FNCE presented a landscape for nutrition professionals to learn and play.? There was truly something for everyone- whether seeking job advice or hoping to sample the latest innovations in the food industry. Our recruiters shared that throughout FNCE they engaged with participants around various topics, including who Sodexo is as an employer, Clinicia- our global brand for clinical and patient nutrition, the Sodexo internship, MS/DCN partnerships, career opportunities and more! ??

Expo Exploration ??

The energy at FNCE was palpable from the moment our team walked into the expo hall, filled with a diverse array of exhibitors showcasing the latest in food products, clinical tools, and dietary innovations. Some notable exhibitors included the Kabrita goat milk-based formula booth- complete with a claw machine filled with stuffed goats, Nature’s Fynd- promoting a sustainable plant-based protein derived from fungi from Yellowstone National Park, and Florida Orange Juice- featuring “Go with the FL-OJ! Wellness Yoga Breaks. As attendees engaged with exhibitors, the conversations ranged from product questions to business and career advice!

CPEU Opportunities ??

Beyond the expo floor, the educational sessions at FNCE were packed with great insights. Sessions like "AI and Your Job Search - Innovative Strategies to Advance Your Career and Compensation Negotiation Success" offered RDs the tools to navigate the increasingly complex job market. Meanwhile, "Innovative Training for New Clinicians: Elevating Patient Care through Effective Onboarding" introduced a cutting-edge model involving department educators in an employee onboarding and mentorship process. "Empowering Dietitians: Bridging the Gap in Clinical Nutrition Support Skills" demonstrated the need for continuous learning and skill development to stay competitive in the ever-evolving nutrition landscape.

Meaningful Conversations ?? ??

What really sets FNCE apart from other professional gatherings are the new introductions and meaningful conversations that unfold on the expo floor, at after-hours events and between sessions. For our recruiters, FNCE is about much more than promoting open roles; it’s about truly connecting with people at all stages of their career journeys. Our recruiters were thrilled to meet attendees face-to-face, taking the time to learn about their unique backgrounds, goals and passions. They loved building genuine connections and engaging in conversations that extended far beyond the typical job search inquiries.

From retired RDs who stopped by to explore part-time employment opportunities—wanting to stay engaged in their profession without the demands of a full-time role—to students eager to get their foot in the door, the diversity of people who came up to chat with our team was incredible. Many students were particularly excited to learn more about Sodexo's internship program, looking for hands-on experience that could help launch their careers. Their enthusiasm was contagious, and our internship representatives took the time to walk them through the program offerings.

One particularly heartwarming aspect of the event was reconnecting with former Sodexo employees who stopped by to reflect on their time with the company. They shared fond memories and referenced how their experiences at Sodexo shaped their current career paths. Our recruiters cherished these moments, as they showcased the long-term impact that a supportive work environment can have on someone. Our former employees weren’t just reminiscing—they were sharing the positive influence Sodexo had on their growth both personally and professionally.

Advancements in Practice ????

Posters displayed in the Expo Hall at FNCE inspired discussions around recent advancements in practice and current research findings. Then there were the conversations about Clinicia, the Sodexo Global Brand for Clinical and Patient Nutrition.? All FNCE attendees received a water bottle at registration with the Clinicia logo, which initiated many conversations about this service brand.? Clinicia’s mission is Elevating the role of nutrition and the expertise of dietitians, fusing our culinary and clinical nutrition expertise.? This mission of enabling dietitians to practice at their highest potential is in line with our observances at FNCE, where the full scope of our practice is in the spotlight at every turn.

Career Opportunities ??

Of course, FNCE wouldn’t be complete without engaging with job seekers. There were many individuals actively exploring new roles and leveraging the networking environment to connect with potential employers. Whether someone was looking for a fresh start or a step up in their career, our recruiters were excited to have these conversations. There’s something about in-person interactions that virtual events can’t quite replicate. The energy, the excitement, and the organic nature of these dialogues make it easier to understand candidates on a deeper level. In-person connections don’t just end with a handshake—they open doors to new opportunities, inspiring both job seekers and recruiters alike.

The comprehensive landscape at FNCE is a prime example of why in-person conferences remain so powerful. ?FNCE provided opportunities for continued learning and continuing education credits, spotlighted the latest research and products in our field, and prompted discussions around job opportunities and career progression. While virtual events certainly have their place, nothing compares to the authenticity of a face-to-face conversation. Attendees didn’t just leave FNCE with bags full of swag (though those were great!); they left with new ideas, opportunities, and relationships that will support them throughout their career progression. For our recruiters, this experience reinforced the importance of being present at events like FNCE, where those spontaneous, yet impactful, connections can truly make a difference in someone’s career trajectory.

So, if you were unable to attend FNCE, or even if you are just curious about RD career trends, what question would you like to ask a dietitian recruiter? Do you want to know more about Sodexo as an employer? Curious about how to get started on your career journey? Or maybe you just want to know about current openings? Ask away and let’s connect! ????
