Networking Can Improve Your Chances of Landing Your Ideal Job

Networking should be part of your routine each day and with the social platforms such as LinkedIn and Service Professionals Network , you can grow and be part of many communities.

For a job seeker, many jobs may not be listed, and it becomes who you know instead of what you know.

Relationships, connections and recommendations become very important in that search and those start with daily networking. How many times have you heard of someone getting a job because someone else recommended them? A lot!

DON’T WAIT UNTIL YOU NEED A JOB TO START NETWORKING - Start planting those seeds today.

Let's talk about how networking can help in your job search.

  • Start with a job search plan - this document will help you narrow down the companies and brands you want to target. Download the job search plan.
  • Target 5 - 10 companies or brands that interest you and have the openings that fit your skills. Start small and then expand. In the past, I created a excel file to keep the targeted companies organized.
  • Now that you have your targeted companies, do searches on LinkedIn to see who you know at those companies - make a list of those contacts within your spreadsheet.
  • Develop a communication plan - if you are connected versus a message if you are not connected. The messages should be different and personalized. Do your research and don’t use a blanket message.
  • Since we are on LinkedIn, engage with these contacts, support their messages and begin to build a relationship. When you connect with them, personalize your message to them and let them know why you are wanting to connect.
  • Networking takes time, so you need to be patient and consistent along with being present everyday.

Looking for a new job is stressful, but the way you network can help in that search and open many doors of opportunity.

LinkedIn Profile Optimization Tip

Profile video - The profile video is a feature that is under-utilized (Yes, I know, I'm also not utilizing and something that I will address with my profile). This is a 30 second clip to welcome someone to your profile and if a jobseeker, a chance to share what you are looking for. Great opportunity to add that human element along with your voice.

Job Search Tip of the Week - This really supports the theme of networking from above.

Tip share by Chris Maclean

If you are just starting your job search:

  • Get clarity on the problems you enjoy solving
  • Understand who can benefit from your solutions
  • Find those people and companies here on LinkedIn
  • Comment under the accounts of 5-10 of those people daily
  • Share your insights, answer questions, and showcase your skills

Do this consistently and you’ll create tremendous attention.

And that’s how you differentiate in a crowded job market.
