Why networking is so important

Networking can be one of the most powerful tools in your business armoury. Because it rarely offers immediate benefits — although sometimes people will win business at networking events — many businesses overlook them. However, it’s best to think about them as an investment, with the return increasing as the connections you make grow.

In fact, networking brings a range of distinct benefits for your business, and each one has a value. Together, they mean that it’s a no-brainer to make sure that you are networking effectively.

One of the reasons that networking is so powerful is that we place a big emphasis on trust and reputation. We naturally prefer to do business with people that we know or have met. So, when people are a looking for a new service or provider, the choice is between something they know from their network, or a stranger, they will almost always go to their network.

But what else can networking offer?

1. Knowledge and information

Networking is a fantastic way to hear news and exchange information. By mixing with people in a similar world, like local businesses, you are likely to talk about shared interests. These will often include facts and tips you wouldn’t have heard before it was too late any other way.

2. Build your brand

Networking is a natural way to build your personal and your company brand. The simple act of talking about what you do raises awareness, and the nature of networking means that information is frequently shared.

3. New opportunities

Coincidences happen far more often than people expect, so don’t be surprised if you go to a networking event and meet the perfect business partner for a new idea. Or hear about a potential new location. Or find a big client.

4. More resources

By enlarging your contact list, you have more people you can call on when you need. Whether it’s for a bit of help or advice, or as a partner for a new project. And the power of networks means that it’s not just limited to those you met directly but can extend into their networks too.

5. A confidence booster

The value of confidence is often overlooked. But business can be lonely, especially when times are difficult, or you are facing pressures. As well as the value of having a network that you can call on for support, networking exposes to other people’s stories. These can be an invaluable source of ideas but can also act as an inspiration for you to follow on your business journey.

Of course, none of these benefits will come without making the effort to network. And it can take some effort, attending events and occasions where there is the possibility to network. But like any investment, the more you put in, the more you will get out.

Although any networking opportunity should be taken, specific networking events are incredibly useful as a starting point. Not only do these have numerous potential contacts, but they will typically have more formal agendas, so you will know exactly what to expect.

Our next event, ‘Hot Stories’ gives businesses the chance to share their ideas and pitches, raising awareness and getting feedback. Whether you want to pitch or just listen, register today, and you’ll soon start seeing the advantages that come from active networking.
